An adolescent, aged 18, was apprehended early Thursday for his alleged role in a lethal shooting dating back more than a year. The attack had tragically taken the life of a 93-year-old woman and critically injured two others. Derrion Taylor now faces charges that include First-Degree Murder, Attempted First-Degree Murder on two counts, along with two counts of Aggravated Assault.
The task of arresting Taylor was executed by the U.S. Marshals Service. The deceased victim, identified as Geraldine Harris, had been discovered lifeless in her residence situated on Kendale Avenue, within the Glendale sector of Midtown. The regrettable incident unfolded on the 17th of January, 2024.
In addition to Harris, two other women had also been the target of the attack, sustaining injuries severe enough to necessitate rush transport to local medical facilities. Police have shared that the violent encounter seemed to have originated from a familial disagreement that spiralled out of control, involving a third party – two men.
Upon conducting an extensive investigation, the U.S. Marshals were able to trace the events back to Taylor, who was aged 17 at the time. This revelation subsequently led to an arrest warrant being issued for him early this week.
Thursday morning saw the safe execution of the warrant. Taylor was apprehended without further incident at a dwelling in the 3000 section of Colony Drive in Memphis, around 8 a.m. His arrest occurred less than half a day after the victims’ relatives publicly voiced their discontent around the lingering pursuit of justice.
In a media interview that aired just before the arrest, Ronald Harris, the bereaved son of the elder victim, voiced a plea for urgency, insisting, ‘Accelerate your efforts, you cannot let this keep happening. Do you plan on waiting till he takes another life?’
Release in the escalation came on Thursday when Harris reported, ‘I was relieved, quite relieved indeed. It was my sister-in-law – the one who was also injured in the shooting – who phoned me with the news of his arrest. We were quite happy with the developments.’
On the other hand, the heartbreaking ordeal for Harris seems to be far from over, as he notes, ‘We have yet to feel the satisfaction of justice. The assurance can only arrive when this case reaches its conclusion. Regrettably for the accused, it is necessary to remove him from society – he is perilous.’
Harris expressed his wish for the city’s officials to address and resolve the mounting issue of youth crime, a systemic problem he stressed needs urgent attention.
Looking towards the future, Harris expressed his concerns, saying, ‘Eventually, Derrion Taylor will conclude his prison sentence and rejoin society. What happens then? I do not wish for any other family to endure the pain and suffering we have experienced.’
Harris’s poignant call to action highlights not only the immediate need for justice in his family’s case but also the broader societal issues surrounding juvenile crime.
The arrest of Derrion Taylor marks a significant step towards obtaining justice for the Harris family, but it also sheds light on the deeply rooted problem of youth involvement in violent crimes.
The issue Harris identifies is a complex one, hinting at systemic societal failures leading to criminal behavior among juveniles. His plea serves as a call for the city, and by extension, society to act on this issue before more families have to endure the kind of pain his family has experienced.
In conclusion, this case reflects the torturous journey of the victims’ families towards justice and the broader underlying issues of youth crime engulfing the society. The resolution of this individual case will undoubtedly bring some solace to the Harris family but also brings to light the necessity of tackling more widespread systemic challenges.
