A New Jersey adolescent, aged 15, is presently facing legal consequences across two distinct jurisdictions. The young man is accused of stealing an elderly woman’s vehicle in New York, after which he purportedly led law enforcement officials on a high-speed chase close to the George Washington Bridge. As of Tuesday, the youth from Mahwah remained held in custody within Bergen County.
On a Saturday, prior to half past noon, law enforcement officers from Suffern in Rockland County received a distress call. The call originated from a neighbor of the elderly victim, who reported the alarming situation. The elderly woman had a previous arrangement with the teenager, who she regularly paid to maintain her yard.
This time, however, the circumstances took a treacherous turn. The boy reportedly requested the woman to shift her vehicle from her driveway. The elderly woman heeded his request, and the teenager ushered her back into her home as she sought the car keys.
The situation escalated dramatically when the teenager allegedly snatched the keys from the woman’s grip. According to the dispatch report, he proceeded to knock the elderly woman to the ground and absconded with her vehicle in his possession. The woman was left injured on the scene following this startling incident.
The elderly victim grievously sustained an injury to her arm and was promptly provided medical assistance by Emergency Medical Services present on the scene. To further ensure her well-being, her son transported her to a local hospital where her condition could be thoroughly evaluated.
In response to the vehicle theft, local Suffern police along with representatives from the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene. The stolen vehicle was consequently registered within a nationwide criminal database.
Simultaneously, law enforcement officers in Englewood, New Jersey caught sight of the stolen Toyota Camry. They attempted to halt the vehicle, but the underage teen continued, failing to heed their signals. Consequently, the pursuit continued.
The teenager drove erratically, causing damage to multiple vehicles in his path. He continued his attempt to evade police on Route 4 until he eventually lost control near the George Washington Bridge. The dramatic chase came to an end with the young driver’s arrest.
The juvenile offender was questioned in custody, where he conceded to the alleged theft. However, he reportedly demonstrated a change in demeanor, becoming defiant and antagonistic towards the investigating officers, according to the Suffern Police.
The young suspect is currently being held in a juvenile detention center. He is awaiting to present in court for his arraignment by Englewood Police, who are in charge of pressing charges. Despite his current location, authorities have expressed their intentions to have him moved.
Pending legal formalities with Englewood Police, authorities intend to transfer the juvenile to the youth section of Rockland County’s criminal court. By moving him to another jurisdiction, he can face arraignment for the charges in New York, where the incident initially occurred.
