Tens of thousands of illegal aliens have self-deported since the Trump administration revamped a controversial Biden-era app, transforming it from a mass migration gateway into a tool for restoring order at the border.
The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) One app—originally designed to help migrants schedule asylum interviews remotely—has been reengineered by the Department of Homeland Security to facilitate voluntary departures. Illegal aliens can now use the app to report their intent to self-deport, allowing the administration to track how many are leaving the country on their own.
According to DHS officials, the program has already seen tens of thousands choose to depart voluntarily, as part of a broader Trump administration strategy to shrink the illegal alien population, estimated to be at 18.6 million as of early 2025.
The self-deportation campaign combines incentives and consequences: the administration now offers $1,000 to those who leave voluntarily, while also threatening fines of up to $1,000 per day for those who refuse. A national ad campaign led by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem features real footage of violent illegal criminals, including a deported MS-13 gang member recaptured at Texas’s notorious Colony Ridge settlement. In the ad, Noem delivers a direct message: “Do what’s right: leave now.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also released an online self-deportation guide, emphasizing that illegal aliens do not need to wait for arrest. “You can leave at any time,” the guidance reads. “If ICE officials arrest you, there’s no going back — you may not have time to get your affairs in order, gather your belongings, or even say goodbye.”
ICE also warns that those who refuse to self-deport may face long-term consequences, including bans on reentry into the United States—even for short visits. “Removal comes with other consequences,” the agency states. “Bars to reentry are penalties for violating U.S. immigration law.”
The CBP Home app is now a centerpiece of the administration’s broader immigration crackdown, signaling a clear shift from Biden’s open-border posture to Trump’s policy of restoring law and order.
