A Californian class-action lawsuit has implicated electric vehicle maker, Tesla, in altering odometer readings in a bid to evade warranty-related repairs. Tesla’s limited warranty, applicable to all its vehicles, promises coverage for a span of 4 years or 50,000 miles, with the caveat that the warranty expires at whichever milestone is reached first.
The complainant in this particular case is a 2020 Tesla Model Y owner. The accusation he lodged against Tesla concerns an alleged manipulation of his odometer to help the company evade footing a repair bill worth $10,000 after a suspension malfunction.
The Model Y owner’s assertion is that although some days consisted of only 27 miles worth of travel in the alleged vehicle, the Model Y was showing an exaggerated travel count of more than 70 miles.
Upon these allegations going public, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, addressed those who have chosen to quickly accept the lawsuit’s premise without further scrutiny. A terse, ‘This is idiotic,’ was Musk’s succinct response to the contentious situation.
Musk’s outright denial has garnered the support of a good number of Tesla fans and advocates. They are persuaded that the company has not resorted to such unscrupulous measures as to fiddle with the vehicles’ odometer readings merely to render the warranty null and void ahead of its stipulated tenure.
On the other hand, there is a faction of watchers who harbor skepticism towards Musk and his business ventures. These folks are not readily swayed by Musk’s assurance, and continue to harbor suspicion regarding the capabilities of the company to engage in such disagreeable practices.
