In light of subdued interest and safety concerns, the prospect of acquiring a reasonably priced Cybertruck seems to be slipping further away for the average American. It seems that Tesla has ceased offering the most budget-friendly model of the Cybertruck, specifically the Cybertruck Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR RWD) that was made available in April of the current year. This change is evident from revisions made on the official Tesla website.
The Long Range variant of the Cybertruck was originally tagged at a base price of $69,990, preceding any applicable tax deductions. This resulted in it being $10,000 less expensive than the next affordable model, the intermediate range Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive (AWD). The Long Range model also held a significant price advantage of over $40,000 when compared to the top-of-the-line variant, tagged as the Cyberbeast, which has a commencement price of $114,990.
Tesla, as of yet, has not issued any formal communication explaining the decision to discontinue this more accessible trim. This decision seems to be abrupt, especially considering the model was only introduced five months ago. However, the base version of the Cybertruck did not receive unanimous approval among Tesla’s user base.
When its availability was announced in the month of April, reactions on popular social media platforms presented a mixed picture. Several critics drew attention to the lack of premium features in comparison to the mid-range variation. Key differences pointed out were the absence of a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter, lack of air suspension, and no rear light bar. Furthermore, a common gripe was the standard bed without the inclusion of a tonneau cover.
However, the discontinuation of the lowest-priced model isn’t the only factor making Cybertruck acquisition a pricier prospect. A soon-to-expire electric vehicle tax credit is set to increase the cost even further. The tax relief, which currently stands at $7,500, is scheduled for termination come September 30, 2025.
Yet, if you remain interested in acquiring one of these Cybertrucks, there is a silver lining. A limited number of Cybertruck Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive vehicles may still be found at select Tesla brick-and-mortar locations around the country.
This development coincides with fresh news indicating a dip in the sales success of the Cybertruck within the U.S. market. Recently, the Cybertruck was dethroned from the prestigious title of the highest selling electric pick-up truck in America during Q1 of 2025.
According to data obtained from national vehicle registration records, the lead spot has been seized by the Ford F-150 Lightning. Adding to the fierce competition, the Chevrolet Silverado EV has managed to stake its claim on the third rank within the race of electric pick-up market shares.
