Texas state Rep. Jolanda Jones sparked outrage and disbelief on Tuesday after making a grotesque comparison between the state’s redistricting process and the Holocaust during an interview with former CNN host Don Lemon.
Jones, who fled Texas for Illinois along with other Democrat legislators to stall a GOP-led redistricting proposal, claimed that Republicans were targeting black communities and compared their political efforts to Nazi genocide.
“They are showing us who they are,” Jones said, referring to Texas Republicans. “And we better have the courage to stand up, otherwise we will fall for anything.”
Then she took it further. “I will liken this to the Holocaust,” she continued. “People are like, well, how did the Holocaust happen? How was somebody in a position to kill all them people? Well, good people remained silent.”
Don Lemon, known for his own history of inflammatory commentary, nodded in agreement.

The interview immediately drew backlash from critics who said Jones’ remarks were not only factually deranged but also deeply offensive to Holocaust survivors and the memory of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazi regime.
Jones’s remarks come amid an ongoing standoff in Texas, where Democrats have fled the state to block a vote on a redistricting map they claim is unfair. Republicans argue the map is a legal and necessary adjustment following the census, and note that Democrats themselves have embraced gerrymandering tactics in states they control, such as Illinois and New York.
What’s particularly ironic is that Jones and her colleagues are seeking refuge in Illinois — a state infamous for one of the most heavily gerrymandered maps in the country, where Democrats routinely carve up conservative districts to maintain control.
Texas Republicans, meanwhile, say the new map adheres to legal and demographic realities and is designed to reflect the will of the voters — not the will of partisan activists fleeing legislative responsibilities.
Jones’ inflammatory rhetoric is the latest example of what critics call a disturbing trend on the left: equating basic political disagreements with atrocities in human history. Instead of making a substantive case against the map, she chose to exploit the Holocaust to score political points — an act many have condemned as disgraceful and historically illiterate.
As the Texas redistricting battle continues, so does the Democrats’ self-inflicted credibility problem. While Republicans focus on governing, their opponents are making headlines for all the wrong reasons — from childish walkouts to wildly offensive historical comparisons that only further alienate reasonable Americans.
