Recent survey results cast a grave shadow over President Joe Biden’s hopes for a second term. Last week, a damning poll conducted by Hart Research, Public Opinion Strategies and NBC News was announced, and the results are far from favorable for our current leader. A shocking 75% of voters polled perceive the nation is spiraling out of control and heading in the wrong direction under Biden’s leadership. To put this into historical context, this notorious percentage rivaled the all-time peak of 70% witnessed at the end of George W. Bush’s term back in 2008.
No administration is immune to criticism, and Obama’s tenure also had its fair share of controversies that birthed a comparable ratio of 65%. However, these concerns seem unprecedented with the incessant heightening of political unrest under Biden’s watch. One cannot fail to note that these statistics vividly highlight the ongoing skepticism around his administration’s strategy and its impact on our beloved nation’s course.
This survey further illuminates the declining trust for Biden in crucial swing states. Among seven swing states, it is worth noting that six are leaning toward Trump, with Wisconsin included. The trust in the Democratic camp seems to be dwindling not just among the neutral voters but noticeably within the heartlands that were long considered Democratic strongholds.
An eye-catching revelation from the survey is about the paradigm shift of non-white voters. Traditionally considered the bedrock of Democratic support, these voters appear to be exploring their political options and increasingly side with the Republican Party. Over the past four years, a staggering shift of approximately 40 points in favor of the GOP has occurred, highlighting a change in sentiments among this demographic.
As Republican pollster Bill McInturff rightly pointed out, 41% of registered voters now affiliate themselves with the Republican party, slightly outweighing the 40% who identify as Democrats. A stark contrast can be seen when comparing these figures with those from the 2016 polls, where Democrats enjoyed a comfortable seven-point lead over Republicans. It seems the tides are turning, or at the very least, we are between shifting currents.
The criticism doesn’t just end with voters. Within the Democratic ranks, murmurs around Biden’s potential replacement are growing louder. Barely a few months shy of the upcoming elections, a discernable faction within Biden’s own party is already considering changing the horse midstream – a telling sign of their confidence, or lack thereof, in the current leadership.
Adding salt to the wound, Biden’s public rallies aren’t helping to improve his image. One of his recent political rallies in Philadelphia had a less than stellar turnout. An eerily almost empty high school gymnasium had to be filled by the very school kids the gym was intended for initially which sends out alarming leadership evaluation signals.
Leading Democratic surveyors add their somewhat pessimistic voice to the melee. A report released last Friday by one such pollster suggested that a faction within the Democratic ‘consultant industrial complex’ is advocating for the replacement of what they perceive to be a vulnerable Joe Biden at the helm of the party’s ticket.
Democratic pollster and analyst John Zogby has branded the ongoing antics of the Democratic ‘consultant-industrial complex’ as premature and dishonorable. He points out their panic and disunity at a time when solidarity behind the president is more crucial than ever. He also argues that their concerns are premature, as some polls are still showing Biden neck and neck with former President Donald Trump.
However, last week was not a good one for Biden. As per the Washington Examiner’s reports, the White House was once again on the back foot, dealing with an inflation issue that refuses to tame down and continues to linger above the Federal Reserve’s 2% goal.
The Biden administration’s diplomacy, particularly regarding the Israel-Gaza peace plan, has met a lackluster response. To further aggravate the situation, the administration seems to have announced this plan without first securing Israel’s support, which adds fuel to the fire of doubts concerning Biden’s leadership and diplomatic competence.
A further blow to the administration was the failure of their Gaza humanitarian mission. The breakdown and disrepair of a $320 million humanitarian port intended for Gaza, resulting from a storm, has been termed by conservative commentator Jed Babbin as ‘a fitting metaphor for the Biden administration.’
Ironically, the tumultuous tide seems to have now turned within the Democratic party itself. ‘Consultant-industrial complex’ associates, who typically only voice their concerns in the final stages of a presidential race, are already considering alternatives for the upcoming elections – a step typically avoided until the last possible moment to prevent blame for a potential loss and to prime themselves for gain post-election, no matter the outcome.
A red flag cited by GOP pollster Jed Babbin is the looming issue of inflation that Biden’s administration has not been able to keep in check. Inflation remains notably high, with the Federal Reserve even considering raising interest rates again, a move widely viewed as an attempt to curb the skyrocketing inflation.
