Minnesota Governor Tim Walz ignited outrage on Sunday after comparing federal immigration enforcement officers to Nazi stormtroopers, suggesting the state was now home to a modern-day version of the Anne Frank story.
Speaking at a press conference, the failed Democrat vice presidential candidate painted a dramatic picture of illegal immigrant children hiding from U.S. agents, invoking Holocaust-era imagery in an attempt to condemn federal operations.
“We have got children in Minnesota hiding in their houses, afraid to go outside,” Walz said. “Many of us grew up reading that story of Anne Frank. Somebody is going to write that children’s story about Minnesota.”
The comment comes on the heels of a deadly confrontation between federal agents and Alex Pretti, a Minneapolis nurse who interfered with a Customs and Border Protection operation. Authorities say Pretti confronted agents and was shot after escalating the situation. Just weeks earlier, Renee Good was killed after attempting to ram an ICE agent with her vehicle. In both cases, federal officials say the use of force was defensive and justified.
Since Good’s death, radical activists have escalated their actions against federal officers in the city. Rioters have confronted agents, blocked vehicles, and shouted violent slogans like “Kill an ICE, Save a Life.” Federal sources say assaults and threats against immigration enforcement have surged in the Minneapolis area.
But instead of condemning the violence, Walz continues to lay blame at the feet of President Donald Trump.
“There’s one person who can end this now,” Walz declared, directly accusing Trump of inflaming tensions.
Sunday’s outburst is just the latest in a long line of inflammatory remarks from the Minnesota governor. Last year, Walz referred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo,” drawing sharp criticism from law enforcement and veterans alike.
The rhetoric is spreading among Democrats. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu have echoed similar sentiments, while newly-elected New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill compared ICE to the East German communist STASI during a CNN appearance on Sunday.
Trump administration officials have had enough.
“Minnesota insurrection is a direct result of a FAILED governor and a TERRIBLE mayor encouraging violence against law enforcement. It’s disgusting,” said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche earlier this month. “Walz and [Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey] — I’m focused on stopping YOU from your terrorism by whatever means necessary. This is not a threat. It’s a promise.”
Federal officials continue to insist that their operations are lawful, targeted, and necessary to remove violent illegal aliens from U.S. communities. But in cities like Minneapolis, where state and local leaders side with radicals instead of law enforcement, the threats continue to grow.
