Toddler Injures Self with Firearm; Parents Held Under Grievous Charges Amidst Reptile Horrors

An unsettling incident unfolded as a toddler injured himself with a self-fired bullet at his own dwelling, a place that interestingly also served as a home for over 30 serpents and an unspecified type of crocodile. This mishap has led to the apprehension of the child’s parents, the local law enforcement authorities reported.

The child’s mother, aged 39, and father, who is 27, are now confronting several accusations including causing grievous harm, severe maltreatment of animals, and holdings of drug-related items. These proceedings were confirmed by the official reports of the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

The little boy who suffered the harm had to undergo a surgical procedure and is presently recuperating in a nearby medical facility. The Sheriff’s office imparted that this unfortunate incident has led to both him and his sibling being transferred into the protective care of Alabama’s Department of Human Resources.

The apprehension of the parents transpired on a Monday following the discovery by the officials of a critically afflicted child rushed to the local hospital last Friday. The child had sustained bullet wounds on his leg and arm, triggering this investigation by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

In an official report, the Sheriff’s office pointed out that the parents made the decision to transport the child to the hospital but did not inform any law enforcement agency about the incident.

It was revealed by the hospital workforce that they overheard the mother saying to the child something which could be understood as, ‘This is the price you pay for meddling with firearms.’ The young boy sustained bullet injuries on both his leg and arm due to a single bullet probably fired by a 9mm handgun, the Sheriff’s office explained.

Moreover, it was observed that a strap was wound around the injured arm which seemed to be functioning as a temporary tightening band that functions to control bleeding.

Throughout the inspection of the family’s residence located in the Sugarland Lake area of Oneonta, the law enforcement officers found not only several unattended firearms, drug-related items and presumed marijuana but also 24 living snakes. Additionally, they discovered a number of dead snakes filled with maggots and also a young creature which could be either a caiman, alligator, or crocodile with its exact species unknown.

The Sheriff’s office also highlighted the fact that the animals were not secured properly but were just kept in boxes without additional security and could be accessed by anyone living in their home.

The living conditions of the animals have now come under the scrutiny of wildlife authorities as reported by the Sheriff’s office. It was also mentioned that the living conditions within the dwelling were very poor, with the house lacking running water or any functioning bathroom.

On Monday, the parents found themselves facing arrests and charges of rash assault, endangering a child chemically by exposing them to harmful drugs, severe animal cruelty and failing to bury or incinerate livestock properly.

On top of that, the reptiles found within the house were subjected to inhumane treatment and were kept in highly unsanitary conditions. The Sheriff’s office provided further evidence of the poor living conditions being experienced by these animals.

In a news briefing on the following Tuesday, Blount County’s Sheriff, Mark Moon, mentioned that they have levelled all possible charges against the parents. ‘Our goal is to ensure they face the full consequences of their actions’, said Sheriff Moon.

He additionally voiced his opinion that in an ideal world, such individuals would serve a lengthy sentence. He also believes it would be best if they never have the opportunity to look after children in the future.
