This year, the sparkling night sky during the United States’ beloved summer holiday could be less brilliant. Trade conflict with China, which accounts for a whopping 99% of global firework production, stoked by tariff impositions, is presenting a significant hurdle to our Independence Day light shows, threatening their scale or even their existence.
The trade imbroglio initiated by the Trump administration has catapulted duties on certain Chinese imports up to 145%, fireworks among them. As such, this development has sent the firework industry into an alarmed state of worry and frenzy. Events marking the Fourth of July across the United States, from coast to coast, might find themselves at the mercy of these skyrocketing tariffs.
Not only may this situation dim the colorful spectacle of our national festivities, but it could severely impact the livelihoods of several small, family-owned businesses that supply these pyrotechnic wonders. In many instances, these establishments have been passed on through generations and have histories that span over a century.
The year 2020 was harsh on the fireworks industry, when it came to a standstill due to the COVID pandemic and its subsequent restrictions. Consequently, many firework shows across the country were called off. These small family-driven businesses managed to weather the storm, but they just barely survived.
In the initial tariff imposition on Chinese goods during Trump’s first term, fireworks were given a reprieve. However, this time the scenario is markedly different, with the exemption lifted. Businesses that were starting to find their footing and blossom amidst the challenges are now in a whirlwind of uncertainty yet again, due to this staggering financial blow.
The timing for this financial irony couldn’t have been worse, striking right at the peak season when inventory streams in from China. The industry is left grappling with the question of how to cope with this abrupt 145% burden.
Every year, about 17,000 Fourth of July celebrations light up small towns and bustling cities across the nation. These gatherings not only foster unity and festivity, but many of them also depend on the spike in revenue that the holiday generates, a significant portion of which comes from the magic of firework displays.
With the elevated costs adding pressure, solutions seem elusive. A possible consequence could be an industry-wide consolidation or an increase in buyouts. As for the notion of moving firework production to the United States, industry insiders consider this a near-impossible proposition.
Touting that a shift in manufacturing fireworks to the United States is unfeasible, industry experts point out a lack of required resources, including gunpowder and various essential chemicals. The economics simply aren’t favorable – all the required ingredients would need to be imported, obliterating cost-effectiveness.
The American firework industry does have a history of domestic production. Back in the mid-20th century, professional Italian pyrotechnicians relocated to New Castle, Pennsylvania, transforming it into the firework capital of the United States. However, by the end of the 1960s, the industry went bust due to regulation reforms from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA).
Despite the struggles, the firework industry makes a loud contribution to the United States economy, exploding to an impressive $2 billion annually. Interestingly, 70% of consumer firework sales are channeled into supporting nonprofits and contribute significantly to their operating budgets.
With the impositions in place, the anticipated impact on this year’s July 4th displays isn’t promising. We could potentially see the grandeur of rockets’ red glare and the excitement of bombs bursting in mid-air significantly subdued.
The likely scenario is of smaller, less overwhelming shows, particularly for those planned by independent operators. Reflecting upon the importance of Independence Day, it is the one holiday that binds us all, irrespective of our differences. Every citizen, regardless of race, creed, or religion, comes together in camaraderie, reveling in national pride and patriotism.
July 4th memories are etched deeply in everyone’s hearts. The community gathering for the grand display of pyrotechnics, a child waving a sparkler applauding the freedom, or merely taking in the festive atmosphere are things most of us hold dear. Probably, it’s these snapshots of joy that will fuel the struggle to keep the firework industry alive amidst all odds.
