Recently, the administrative body under former President Trump requested an interruption in a federal court’s decision that had limited the breadth of immigration raids in Southern California. Following this development, the region has witnessed an arrest of approximately 3,000 individuals since the beginning of June, as per the records from the Deportation Data Project.
Eunisses Hernandez, a respected member of the Los Angeles City Council, is the representative for District 1. The areas she covers include MacArthur Park and the extensive neighborhood of Westlake, which have been prominent sites for these operations and displays of power led by the federal immigration officers.
At this moment, Hernandez appears unsure about the precise count of the immigration raids executed in her district. Nevertheless, she confirms multiple instances of the raids at various Home Depots and day worker hubs. Local grassroots organizations have emerged as a pivotal source of such intelligence.
Hernandez informs that the City of Los Angeles is currently evaluating the legal means to combat these actions. She also emphasizes the need for other strategies to aid the residents of LA, including strengthening community defense, providing knowledge about legal rights, and initiating drives for food distribution.
Hernandez’s concern amplifies with the fear that the ongoing raids might frighten the city’s dwellers into staying at home, leading to hunger or eviction. Intent on dealing with the issue, Hernandez says, “Our focus is on ensuring that we can provide nourishment, secure housing for our people, and resist any further intrusion by federal forces into our city.”
Notably, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is reportedly looking into more than 80 cases of potential misconduct during the protests against these immigration raids. Disturbingly, some of the allegations against the officers involve the use of excessive force.
In response to this, Hernandez proactively proposed several motions in the City Council towards the end of June. These tolls aim to uphold higher standards of accountability during protest situations, in addition to regulating the way police may interact with federal immigration authorities should they be asked to engage.
Last week, Hernandez discloses, she became aware of some misunderstandings regarding the severity of the situation in Los Angeles. She got this information indirectly but saw it as an important insight.
Faced with the fresh financial support for the federal immigration operations, Hernandez voices her caution. She says, “The essence of what I’m trying to convey is that what we are experiencing here won’t be contained to only our city. These incidents result from funding designed to escalate in other regions, eventually reaching your doorstep too. It’s crucial to remember that our immigrant communities form the backbone of this nation’s workforce.”
