President Trump announced Sunday that the renewed fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will “stop momentarily,” crediting recent U.S.-brokered diplomacy and claiming the United States has effectively taken over the role of global peacekeeper from the United Nations.
“I am pleased to announce that the breakout fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will stop momentarily, and they will go back to living in PEACE, as per our recently agreed to original Treaty,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
His statement followed a ceasefire deal signed Saturday between the two Southeast Asian nations, although Thai airstrikes were reportedly carried out earlier that day, casting doubt on how long the deal will hold.
The conflict centers on a long-disputed border region that has been the site of tensions and skirmishes for decades. Trump previously applied trade pressure on both countries to push for a resolution, leading to a temporary peace brokered by Malaysia in July. That agreement was formalized in October at a ceremony Trump attended.
Despite that breakthrough, fighting re-emerged in December.
Trump used the occasion to highlight what he called his growing record of ending global conflicts, contrasting the U.S. role under his leadership with that of the United Nations.
“With all of the wars and conflicts I have settled and stopped over the last eleven months, EIGHT, perhaps the United States has become the REAL United Nations, which has been of very little assistance or help in any of them, including the disaster currently going on between Russia and Ukraine,” he wrote.
Trump called on the UN to “start getting active and involved in WORLD PEACE,” blasting the organization’s ineffectiveness in handling global conflicts.
The latest ceasefire announcement came just hours before Trump was set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago to discuss ongoing peace negotiations with Russia. That sit-down follows a series of recent meetings between U.S. and Ukrainian officials as Trump pushes for a resolution to the war in Eastern Europe.
