Former US president Donald Trump stated on the Truth Social platform his plans to eliminate Sanctuary Cities, branding them as protecting perpetrators instead of victims. He conveyed his sentiments to a worldwide audience, calling out these cities as a stain on the nation. Trump showed his intentions to prepare documents which will cease any federal funding for cities or states that support what he refers to as ‘death traps.’
Citing the Center for Immigration Studies, it’s explained that some areas in the US—ranging from state, county to city level—have set specific laws, rules, or policies that can potentially block immigration enforcement and shield individuals with criminal records from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The state of New York is one of 13 states, as acknowledged by the center, which function as sanctuary city states. These states, besides New York, include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Washington.
Within the state of New York, there are a significant number of counties and cities recognized as specific sanctuary cities. This includes the five boroughs of the metropolis, New York City, with some officials of Staten Island voicing their appeal to the Governor, Kathy Hochul, to roll back the sancturary city status in the wake of the immigration crisis of 2024.
The complete list of New York counties and cities identified as sanctuary cities by the center consists of Albany and Albany County, Dutchess County, Monroe County, Nassau County, New York City, Orange County, Putnam County, Rockland County, Saratoga County, Suffolk County, Sullivan County, Tompkins County, Ulster County, Warren County, Wayne County, Westchester County, and Yates County.
During a Congressional meeting in March, set around the subject of sanctuary cities, the Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams accentuated: ‘I am committed to curating an environment where every resident, whether they are documented or not and who obey the law, can avail key services without the apprehension of being handed over to federal enforcement authorities.’
Adding by the implication of this statement, any resident, regardless of their immigration status, can live without the fear of retaliation or unnecessary law enforcement’s intervention if they follow the laws of society. This policy instills a sense of security and mutual respect among the community members which is considered essential in a multicultural city like New York.
Sanctuary city states as mentioned above, including New York, have adopted these policies with an empathetic approach towards the lives of their residents.
