President Donald Trump hinted Tuesday that Vice President JD Vance is the leading contender to carry the Republican torch in the 2028 presidential election. The comment marks Trump’s clearest signal yet that Vance is poised to inherit the MAGA movement.
After signing another series of executive orders at the White House, Trump responded to a question from Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy, who referenced Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent praise of Vance.
“You could clear the entire Republican field right now. Do you agree that the heir-apparent to MAGA is JD Vance?” Doocy asked.
“Well, I think most likely, in all fairness,” Trump responded. “He’s the vice president. I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form.”
Though Trump stopped short of a full endorsement, he made it clear that Vance is currently the front-runner in his mind.
“I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here, so it’s too early obviously to talk about it,” Trump said. “But certainly, [Vance] is doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point.”
Trump made the remarks while flanked by key cabinet members, including Vance himself, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and Attorney General Pam Bondi — all of whom have been mentioned by political observers as possible 2028 hopefuls.
Trump’s comments followed remarks from Rubio last week, who told Lara Trump during an interview that Vance would be a “great nominee” in 2028. “He’s a close friend,” Rubio said. “I hope he intends to do it.”
While Rubio made clear he has no plans to run and intends to stay on as Secretary of State through the end of Trump’s second term, some have speculated that a Rubio-Vance alliance or even ticket could be a possibility if the two find common ground.
With Trump signaling he “probably” won’t seek a third term and with MAGA holding full command of the Republican Party, the 2028 primary is shaping up to be a contest among top-tier Trump allies — with JD Vance clearly at the front of the pack.
For now, Vance has stayed quiet on his 2028 intentions, but speculation is intensifying. The 2028 race will be the first in over a decade without Trump at the top of the ticket, and the stakes for the future of the America First movement couldn’t be higher.
