Trump Says He’s ‘Totally In Favor’ Of Revoking ABC, NBC Broadcast Licenses

President Donald Trump escalated his war with the mainstream media Sunday night, blasting ABC and NBC as “the most biased networks in history” and declaring his full support for revoking their broadcast licenses.

In a series of Truth Social posts, Trump accused the networks of being mouthpieces for the Democrat Party and suggested the FCC should strip local affiliates of their licenses.

“Despite a very high popularity and, according to many, among the greatest 8 months in Presidential History, ABC & NBC FAKE NEWS, two of the worst and most biased networks in history, give me 97% BAD STORIES,” Trump wrote. “IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEY ARE SIMPLY AN ARM OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY AND SHOULD, ACCORDING TO MANY, HAVE THEIR LICENSES REVOKED BY THE FCC.”

He continued, “I would be totally in favor of that because they are so biased and untruthful, an actual threat to our Democracy!”

Targeting the Networks’ Local Affiliates

Although ABC and NBC themselves do not hold broadcast licenses, their individual local stations do — and are required to obtain them through the FCC. Trump questioned why these stations aren’t being held financially accountable.

“Why is it that ABC and NBC FAKE NEWS… aren’t paying Millions of Dollars a year in LICENSE FEES?” he asked. “They should lose their Licenses for their unfair coverage of Republicans and/or Conservatives… Crooked ‘journalism’ should not be rewarded, it should be terminated!”

Media Bias and Legal Leverage

A report from the Media Research Center found that 92% of coverage of Trump across ABC, NBC, and CBS’s evening newscasts was negative, even as Trump’s second term has seen record-high approval numbers in GOP polling.

Trump recently settled a $16 million lawsuit with CBS over the alleged deceptive editing of a Kamala Harris interview before the 2024 election — a move he characterized as blatant election interference.

FCC Response

Federal Communications Commission member Brendan Carr weighed in on the broader issue late last year, suggesting the agency may revisit its oversight role.

“You look on the media side, I think there’s no question that trust in media is at an all-time low,” Carr said. “They have to operate in the public interest. And I think it’s probably appropriate for the FCC to take a fresh look at what that requirement looks like.”

Carr noted that national networks supply the bulk of content aired by locally licensed stations and hinted that empowering local broadcasters over national agendas might be on the table.

“The law is very clear. The Communications Act says you have to operate in the public interest. And if you don’t, yes, one of the consequences is potentially losing your license,” Carr said.
