President Donald Trump said Iran has requested a cease-fire amid escalating U.S. military operations, but made clear that no agreement will be considered until the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened.
In public remarks, Trump claimed Iran’s leadership had reached out seeking to halt the conflict, describing the request as a sign of mounting pressure on the regime. He said any pause in operations would depend on restoring unrestricted access to the critical shipping route.
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the standoff, with roughly a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil passing through the narrow waterway. Ongoing disruptions have driven up global energy prices and contributed to rising fuel costs in the United States.
Trump indicated that U.S. military operations would continue until Iran ceases its interference in the region. He described recent strikes as part of a broader effort to eliminate Iran’s offensive capabilities and force a resolution on terms favorable to U.S. interests.
While Iranian officials have previously disputed claims about direct negotiations, the administration has suggested that communication channels remain active behind the scenes, including discussions involving senior figures in Tehran.
The president also signaled that the current phase of military operations may be nearing completion, pointing to sustained strikes on key infrastructure and military targets across Iran.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said recent data shows a sharp decline in missile and drone launches from Iran, suggesting that U.S. operations are significantly degrading the country’s ability to respond.
The campaign has reportedly targeted command centers, weapons depots, and other strategic assets, including facilities tied to missile production and storage.
At the same time, Trump has continued pressing U.S. allies to take a more active role in securing global energy routes, criticizing nations that have hesitated to engage directly in the conflict or assist in reopening the strait.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States is close to achieving its objectives, which include dismantling Iran’s military capabilities and limiting its ability to project power in the region.
