Trump Says Peace Between Cambodia And Thailand Imminent After Phone Calls: ‘Very Good Conversation’

President Donald Trump announced over the weekend that a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia may be on the horizon, following a flurry of direct phone calls with both nations’ leaders from his temporary base in Scotland.

The President first revealed on Saturday that he had spoken to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet about halting the escalating conflict along the contested border. Within half an hour, Trump followed up with an update, saying he had just gotten off the phone with Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, and that both countries were now signaling their willingness to reach an immediate ceasefire.

“Just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia relative to stopping the War with Thailand,” Trump posted to Truth Social. “I am calling the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, right now, to likewise request a Ceasefire, and END to the War, which is currently raging.”

In a rare move, Trump openly tied U.S. trade policy to peace negotiations, saying, “We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so!”

After his call with Thai leadership, Trump said both sides appeared open to a resolution: “Thailand, like Cambodia, wants to have an immediate Ceasefire, and PEACE. I am now going to relay that message back to the Prime Minister of Cambodia. After speaking to both Parties, Ceasefire, Peace, and Prosperity seems to be a natural. We will soon see!”

The two countries have seen rising tensions and border skirmishes in recent weeks over long-disputed territory. While localized violence has not yet escalated to full-scale war, the flare-ups have raised serious concerns within the international community, especially as Thailand remains a key American ally and Cambodia has been increasingly aligned with Communist China.

Trump acknowledged the potential for broader implications if the conflict isn’t brought under control, saying it reminded him of the India-Pakistan conflict that he helped mediate in his first term. “Many people are being killed in this War,” Trump wrote, “but it very much reminds me of the Conflict between Pakistan and India, which was brought to a successful halt.”

The Thai government has been in a precarious position since the suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra earlier this month, temporarily elevating Phumtham Wechayachai once again to the acting leadership role. Trump’s quick engagement with both parties underscores the administration’s renewed focus on hands-on, personal diplomacy.

While no formal ceasefire agreement has been signed yet, U.S. officials believe a deal could be within reach if both sides follow through on Trump’s proposed framework. According to one senior administration source, the State Department and National Security Council have been instructed to support Trump’s direct efforts, rather than overtaking them, in keeping with the president’s personalized foreign policy style.

If successful, the Cambodia-Thailand truce would mark another high-profile diplomatic win for Trump, who has recently expanded his foreign policy presence amid major breakthroughs on tariffs and Middle East realignment.

With American trade negotiations underway with both Southeast Asian countries and escalating tensions risking regional destabilization, a swift ceasefire could also help protect U.S. economic and strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific.

“The goal is peace, prosperity, and stability,” one Trump official said. “And the President believes he’s the one who can deliver it — again.”
