In a recent address, the past President of the United States, Donald Trump, ripped into current President Joe Biden over his immigration policy. This policy, perceived as a ‘reform’ by many, was enacted this week through an executive order, and is viewed by some as a barely concealed amnesty. It essentially provides millions of individuals who entered the U.S. illegally a veil of protection.
Trump kicked off his speech by addressing some criticism he’d received about reportedly calling Milwaukee a ‘terrible city’ in a private meeting with Republicans from the House. ‘I’ve always had a soft spot for Milwaukee, and fittingly, I was the one who selected it’, he informed the assembled listeners.
He primarily concentrated his compromising remarks on the topic of immigration, a pertinent subject considering an Executive Order had been recently announced by the Biden administration. This executive action would provide an opportunity for undocumented aliens who are wedded to American citizens to live and work legally in the United States.
The former president, evidenced by his robust comments, wasn’t pleased with this course of action. ‘Our President is sending a clear message to the planet that illegal immigration is not a crime but a rewarded endeavor – a dangerous precedent.’, said Trump, stirring the crowd.
He went on to argue this policy hurt many diverse communities in America, ‘The ones taking the brunt of the impact are our Black and Hispanic citizens’, he remarked. He also highlighted another group, ‘And another entity taking a hit, quite significantly, happens to be labor unions’. The majority of voters from these demographics had supported Biden in the 2020 elections.
However, recent polling data suggests that the political loyalty landscape might be shifting. The polls indicate Trump is gradually gaining traction amongst Black and Hispanic voters, indicating a possible shift in the electoral tides, potentially disturbing Biden’s future prospects.
Trump made a firm commitment to dismantle Biden’s immigration tactics if he returned to office. Concurrently, he echoed the sentiment voiced by numerous Republicans that this policy was just political sleight of hand designed to enroll fresh blood into the voters’ list just in time for November’s elections.
‘Joe Biden’s treasonous path is not going to endure. Upon my reelection, his illegal amnesty strategy will be torn asunder and discarded on day one of my new tenure’, he asserted. He further elucidated, ‘He’s just using these people, but he has plans to allow everyone to enter, and you know why – they’re making attempts to register these individuals’.
Biden made the announcement while marking the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. He was surrounded by leaders from immigrant advocacy groups and the Latino community. This program has been instrumental in providing opportunities to immigrants, especially DACA recipients who have received degrees from U.S. universities, to get work visas.
The enhancement of the parole-in-place plan is seen as an accompaniment to the actions aimed at making the process easier for these immigrants. The move will not bestow new privileges upon the beneficiaries. Instead, it will simplify the existing procedures for them to formalize their immigration status.
The DACA program has experienced a tumultuous journey, fluctuating between different levels of the judiciary and the Supreme Court. It was installed via executive order by then-President Barack Obama, albeit after repeated claims of not having the authority to do so.
The potential to expand DACA remained a point of contention. In 2016, the Supreme Court stalled at a 4-4 split over an expanded DACA and a similar program for parents of DACA recipients. However, in 2020, the Supreme Court decided by a 5-4 majority that the Trump administration had improperly ceased DACA and allowed it to persist.
Last year, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen sided with Texas and eight other states that attempted to end the DACA program. Fast forward to 2022, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans supported Hanen’s prior decision, labeling DACA as illegal.
However, the case was remitted back to Judge Hanen for a review of the modifications made by the Biden administration to the DACA program. This changing legal terrain further complicates already existing complexities regarding immigration reform in the United States.
Without a doubt, the fate of DACA and various other facets of immigration policy are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping the course of future political discourse.
Irrespective of political affiliation, the potential changes to immigration policy will resonate with the majority, bringing into consideration the values of legality, compassion, and economic viability in the tense debate around immigration.
