President Donald Trump told reporters Sunday that a historic peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could be just weeks away, saying the two sides are “closer than ever” to ending the war that has devastated the region for nearly four years.
Speaking from Mar-a-Lago after a high-stakes meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump revealed that he had also spent over two hours on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier that day.
“It’s been a very difficult negotiation,” Trump said. “We could be very close. There are one or two very thorny issues, but I think we’re doing very well. We made a lot of progress today.”
The main sticking point, according to Trump, remains the future of land seized by Russia during the conflict.
“The land — they’re talking about. Some of that land has been taken, some of that land is maybe up for grabs, some of that land may be taken over the next couple of months,” Trump explained. “You’re better off making a deal now.”
Trump emphasized that both sides are exhausted by the war, and that his goal is simple: “I want it ended because I don’t want to see so many people dying.”
Zelensky, seated beside Trump, nodded in agreement as the former president described a new level of openness from Putin.
“I saw a very interesting President Putin today,” Trump said. “I think we’re going to get there.”
He added that Putin was more receptive during this call than in any previous interaction. “We didn’t talk about the weather,” Trump said, underscoring the seriousness of the conversation.
When asked what happens next, Trump said he believes the Ukrainian government may need to bring the final agreement to its parliament or hold a public referendum. Either way, he stressed that momentum is building.
“In a few weeks, we will know one way or the other,” Trump said. “It’s a tough road, but it’s possible.”
Ending the war in Ukraine has been one of Trump’s top foreign policy priorities since returning to the White House, and Sunday’s press conference marked a major turning point in what could be the most consequential peace negotiation of the modern era.
