Once a boastful figure, Donald Trump, the former president, demonstrated a firm belief that ratings were all that mattered. He finds himself in a precarious situation today as his approval ratings plummet, casting a harsh light on his naivety. Recent polls reveal a noticeable slide that he probably hadn’t foreseen.
Last week, several reputable sources including Gallup, Reuters/Ipsos, and Fox News released polls that placed Trump’s 100-day approval ratings significantly below those of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush. This constitutes a humiliating reality for the once seemingly invincible businessman.
The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos survey of 2464 American adults, conducted from April 18-22, reported a mere 39% approval for Trump’s performance as president. Just a couple of months prior, in February, the approval stood at a healthier 45%. The severity and speed of this decline underscore his disconnect with the American citizens.
Interestingly, a CNN poll conducted by SSRS rated him slightly more favorably, at 41%. This, however, barely offsets the continually plummeting approval Trump’s administration has been struggling with since March.
We recall how he comfortably enjoyed the backing of four out of ten American adults at the beginning of his term. It’s apparent now that this support was fleeting. A study by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, divulges this precipitous drop in his popularity.
With the announcement of Trump’s ill-conceived tariffs, the markets fell into disarray. Widespread damage ensued, devastating the retirement plans of hardworking ordinary citizens. This economically damaging move stripped away the last semblance of faith that many Americans held for his leadership.
The Washington Post insightfully presented the decline in a president’s rating as a phenomenon that invariably occurs at some point during their term. Yet, what precision was missing in this assessment was the rarity of such a decline occurring so soon after one assumes office. Trump unfortunately earned this dubious distinction.
CNN, in its probe, unearthed the sections of the population that have grown the most skeptical of Trump’s work. Women, who daresay may bring a more calibrated lens to the presidency, have shown a 36% approval. As for Hispanic Americans, merely 28% tolerate his performance.
The release of last week’s damaging statistics incited an expected ire in Trump, prompting an impulsive display on Truth Social. As per the last check, he hadn’t put forth a public response to the latest polls, his silence perhaps an unwitting admission of the troubling trend.
In a 2023 interview, Trump declared that one’s character mattered little in the face of ratings. Whether crude or elegant, mean or lovely, evil or praiseworthy, the outcome hinged on where you stood in the ratings. Unfortunately for him, the current ratings point towards a resounding rejection by the American populace.
Joe Biden’s ratings, when contrasted, tell a starkly different tale. Although he too faces challenging circumstances, it’s clear he’s not alienating his constituents at the startling rate that Trump once did, judging by the numbers.
Tariffs, under Biden’s watch, have been managed with a more measured approach, avoiding a catastrophic plunge into market mayhem. This has mitigated much of the damage to citizens’ retirement plans that we saw under the tumultuous guidance of Trump.
Women, according to recent polls, approve of Biden’s presidency. A far cry from the feeble 36% that approved of Trump’s tenure, and indicative of Biden’s softer and more considered approach to governance.
However, Biden’s approval ratings amongst Hispanic Americans do not paint a significantly better picture. At underwhelming numbers, it seems clear that there remains a need for greater advocacy and focused attention towards this section of the populace.
It’s worthwhile to remember that staying in the favor of voters requires more than just a ratings game. Lessons from the Trump era expose the value of consistent leadership, responsive and understanding to the diverse needs of the American people. One wonders whether Trump would have fared better had he heeded this fact.
