Anticipating the future events of a potential Donald Trump presidency offers a glimpse into the ensuing chaos and amplified oppression for people of color and other vulnerable segments of society. The foreshadowed nightmare extends beyond the hostilities against Haitians and the prejudiced inferences about Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s array of first-day-in-office promises forebode of unsettling times ahead.
One particular promise that Trump has repeatedly made exploits the unsettling episode of the Jan 6th rioters. Despite the attack on the United States’ very symbol of democracy, Trump plans on pardoning the assailants. His aspirations, expressed last year in an interview, underscore his willingness to overlook offense to the democratic institution. The magnitude of his leniency extends to the over 1580 defendants, amongst which more than 1200 have been convicted for crimes ranging from seditious conspiracy to unlawful parading.
His desire to amend a key component of the 14th amendment further instills fear. The amendment, which offers automatic citizenship for individuals born in the U.S., should he modify it, would likely set off a string of prolonged legal battles.
Staying consistent with his hard stance on immigration, Trump has pledged to deport undocumented immigrants at an unprecedented scale. His statements just prior to the election encapsulated this intention by laying out a roadmap for the ‘largest deportation program in American history.’
Another alarming promise concerns the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, two significant trading partners of the U.S. Trump maintains this stance, despite the potential implications for the American economy and commerce.
Among his many contentious commitments was a claim of an effective resolution to the Ukraine crisis within one day of his presidency, a wildly unrealistic timeframe considering the geopolitical complexity of the region. His bold claim during a debate with Kamala Harris was both shocking and dismissive of the gravity of the conflict.
His staunch advocacy for increased oil drilling within the United States is yet another contentious issue. Trump proposed that spiking the U.S.’s oil production could lead to a substantial reduction in energy costs which, however, fail to consider the environmental consequences of such moves.
Transgender rights also seem to be in jeopardy under Trump’s potential presidency. He has stated plans to ensure transgender women cannot participate in women’s sports, going so far as to threaten the reduction of federal funding for schools that advocate certain perspectives.
In an apparent opposition to gender-affirming care that occasionally constitutes hormone therapy, Trump declared intentions to roll back specific policies delivering resources and advice concerning care options.
In the realm of the automobile industry, Trump envisioned a future where cars are manufactured domestically. His aspiration for the industry is to be powered by ‘American energy,’ supplied by ‘American suppliers,’ and manned by ‘American workers’.
Trump is poised to upend Biden’s directive, which had a target of half of all new vehicle sales by 2030 being zero-emission types. Despite the progressive environmental initiatives like the EPA’s finalized emission limits and California’s law requiring all new cars in the state to be zero-emission, Trump still dismisses these as ‘electric vehicle mandates’ and threatens to terminate them.
On his maiden day in the office, Trump is committed to dismantling every ‘open-borders policy’ from the current administration, signaling his intent to reestablish all of his first term’s rigorous border policies.
The diversity initiatives that America has strived to implement are at risk under Trump’s potential reign. His promise extends to cutting off funds to any educational institutions that propagate certain viewpoints or insist on vaccine or mask mandates. He has also guaranteed to end inflation, without providing a clear roadmap.
