Trump’s Executive Order Blitz Leaves Democrats Reeling

Fulfilling the mantle of command handed to him by the citizens, President Trump had rapid-fire executive orders lined up from the get-go, taking bold action on a range of issues from immigration to education and the economy. Robert McCarthy, a 68-year-old ex-city councilor from Lewiston, added his voice to the chorus of Mainers who put their faith in Trump, appreciating the significant policy changes that he sees as a reflection of Trump’s commitment to his promises. ‘Against the harsh resistance from the Democrats, Trump is steadfast in his resolve to deliver on his promises, despite the daunting task of navigating complex rules and regulations,’ McCarthy opines.

The dizzying speed at which the Trump administration rose to the occasion of government overhaul has undoubtedly stirred the waters. It leaves some Americans unsettled, fueling the ire of opposition from Democrats. However, based on polls and the opinion of nearly a dozen Trump supporters in Maine, it’s evident that most Republicans solidly see these actions as Trump walking his campaign talk.

Andrew Smith, director of the UNH Survey Center, offers an explanation from a poll which mirrors political change. Fluctuations in approval ratings are a norm when power changes hands, Smith argues. ‘As the political events unfold, it’s expected to see little shifts here and there in approval and disapproval ratings,’ he said.

Recent developments did spark a sense of unease among some Trump supporters in Maine. Yet, their support for the lion’s share of Trump’s actions stood unwavering, predicting that the forthcoming three years of his second term carry significant promise, particularly in terms of culture issues and immigration.

Maine has unfortunately turned into a ground zero of sorts in the growing cultural conflict following an issue between Trump and Governor Janet Mills regarding state laws pertaining to transgender athletes in high school sports. Trump was assertive in highlighting discrepancies between his executive order and the state law, underscoring potential risks to Maine’s federal funding.

Historically, Trump’s fraction of the GOP finds itself at odds with conventional conservatives, stirring up internal debates. However, many among these traditional conservatives made peace with their differences and cast their votes for Trump, while others transformed into outright supporters in recent years.

Despite the immigrant demographic growing in Maine, when put in the context of national data, their presence remains minor. Around 4% or 53,000 of Maine’s 1,405,000 inhabitants are immigrants, with less than 2% or roughly 25,000 of the total state population lacking citizenship.
