Tucker Carlson, a potent force on the right-wing media landscape, has been known for his unconventional viewpoints on various issues. One such peculiar contention surrounds Pete Buttigieg’s sexuality. In a somewhat strange narrative, Carlson has repeatedly cast doubts on Buttigieg’s public avowal of being gay, even going so far as to express a desire to ‘prove’ that Buttigieg is in fact, not gay.
Peculiar as it may be, this is not the first instance of the right-wing pundit casting aspersions on Buttigieg’s sexual orientation. In the last year, Carlson voiced similar sentiments, calling into question the truthfulness of Buttigieg’s declaration of his sexuality. Paradoxically, these claims are wrapped in an air of certainty, as though the pundit has privileged access to information, the rest of the world remains oblivious to.
In a conversation with Michael Knowles, a fellow conservative political commentator, Carlson’s idiosyncratic ideas about Buttigieg came to the fore once again. Upon hearing Buttigieg’s name, Carlson tagged him as the ‘fake gay guy’, suggesting his publicly acknowledged identity was a ruse. These remarks came from a pundit whose show thrives on controversy and the unconventional.
Resourceful as always, Carlson tries to derive credibility from his own sphere. He referred to his gay producer who seems convinced that Buttigieg is not genuine about his sexual orientation. The producer allegedly thinks that Buttigieg, who was seen with a girl in the recent past, is flirting with the gay identity solely because he aspires to be the Democratic nominee.
The allegations from Carlson could be in light of reports which suggest that Buttigieg had been involved in heterosexual relationships during his college days. However, it seems, in the grand scheme of things, the pundit is bent on repackaging vague associated facts and conjectures as verified truths, underplaying the dynamism and fluidity of human sexuality.
Adding to this, Carlson had made a bold, yet odd claim, asserting he has in-depth knowledge about gay sexual behavior. He expressed a keen interest in interviewing Buttigieg, presuming it to be the platform where he can ‘test’ Buttigieg on his familiarity with details of gay sex. It’s as though he expects Buttigieg to fail proving the genuineness of his claim to homosexuality.
Casting all accusations and speculations aside, Buttigieg publicly came out as gay in 2015. Not long after, he met his soon-to-be husband, Chasten, on a dating app called Hinge. Their bond, as maintained by Buttigieg, was formed over simple exchanges and shared food—a testament to their candid, real-life love story that manifests despite ambiguous and misplaced remarks from critics.
The couple took their relationship to the next level when they tied the knot in June 2018, essentially three years after their fortuitous meeting on Hinge. Clearly defying conventional norms and traditional expectations, they made their partnership official, stepping up as an example to fellow members of the LGBTQ+ community. This move adds another layer of credibility to Buttigieg’s ‘controversial’ assertion of being gay.
Buttigieg and Chasten, now officially a married couple, expanded their family in 2021 by welcoming twins Penelope and Joseph into their lives. Buttigieg, in spite of all scrutiny and skepticism, continued to live his life openly, expanding his family, and assuming his role as a husband and father, further puncturing Carlson’s ‘fake gay’ theory.
In another strange hypothesis, Carlson had also animatedly claimed that Kamala Harris’s former running mate, Tim Walz, is ‘super, super gay’. In the entirety of Carlson’s narrative, Walz’s supposed homosexuality was presented as more of an accusation than a statement of identity. On closer inspection, the basis of such a claim becomes elusive.
Carlson, in a typical contradiction, questioned Harris’s pick of Walz when Buttigieg, according to him, was the actual gay candidate. This crisscross of arguments seems to not bother the pundit. In Carlson’s universe, it’s as if he wanted the Democrats to pick Buttigieg only to maintain his narrative of Buttigieg being a fraud.
After his bold prediction about Walz, Carlson further added that he is visibly gay. This speculation was made despite Walz being married to Gwen Whipple since 1994 and having two children together. Yet, Carlson seemed to draw conclusions about Walz’s sexuality from some unspecified visual clues, uncaring about potential contention.
His claims about politicians’ sexual orientation seem to be drawn from a well of sheer speculation and stubborn insistence, not factual evidence. The pundit admittedly expected backlash for such statements, presuming that his observations about alternately labeling Buttigieg as ‘fake gay’ and Walz as ‘obviously gay’ are bound to stir controversy.
In sum, Carlson’s controversial statements about Buttigieg’s and Walz’s sexual orientation are a convoluted mix of contrived narratives and personal beliefs that vey far off from the generally accepted reality. The underlying narrative seems to be an attempt to discredit these politicians based solely on conjecture and innuendos, rather than any credible evidence.
