Two National Guardsmen Shot Near White House, Suspect in Custody as Trump Orders Reinforcements

Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot near the White House Wednesday afternoon in what officials are calling a deliberate act of violence against uniformed service members.

The shooting occurred near the Farragut West metro station in downtown Washington, D.C., sparking chaos just blocks from the executive mansion. The National Guard troops, both in uniform, were reportedly critically wounded and rushed to separate hospitals.

Initial reports indicated that both had died from their injuries, with West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey stating that “these brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country.” However, Morrisey later clarified there were “conflicting reports” about their condition and said more information would follow.

President Donald Trump, who was in Florida at his Mar-a-Lago residence for Thanksgiving, responded swiftly.

“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded… is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price,” Trump wrote. “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People.”

The suspect, who has not been identified, was critically wounded during the incident and taken into custody. Authorities say the scene has been secured and the shooter acted alone.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth denounced the attack as “a cowardly, dastardly act targeting the best of America.” He confirmed that President Trump has ordered an immediate deployment of an additional 500 National Guard troops to the capital.

“This will only stiffen our resolve to ensure that we make Washington, D.C., safe and beautiful,” Hegseth added.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also weighed in, confirming the attack and asking the public to pray for the wounded Guardsmen. “@DHSgov is working with local law enforcement to gather more information,” she said.

The shooting comes amid a broader push by President Trump to crack down on spiraling crime in the nation’s capital. Over 2,300 National Guard troops have already been deployed to D.C. as part of Operation City Shield, a sweeping effort to restore law and order in America’s urban centers.

Democrats have sharply criticized the National Guard presence, accusing Trump of militarizing U.S. cities. But incidents like this underscore the increasingly dangerous climate faced by law enforcement and service members operating in high-crime zones.

Video footage captured shortly after the shooting shows a massive law enforcement response near Farragut West station, just steps from some of the most secure and surveilled areas of the country.

The FBI and Secret Service are assisting D.C. police in the investigation. No motive has been released.
