U.S. Military Contemplates Deployment of National Guard to Tackle D.C. Crime

U.S. military officials are considering the deployment of National Guard forces in Washington, D.C. in response to President Trump’s initiative to tackle criminal activities in the city. As of early Monday, the President hadn’t sanctioned any official dispatch orders. However, it is anticipated that he will publicize at a press briefing from the White House that a cadre of D.C. National Guardsmen, potentially numbering in the hundreds, will be dispatched to aid local law enforcement within the capital city.

In the early hours of Monday, no other specifics regarding this proposed troop deployment were accessible. Although crime figures in D.C. are downtrending, President Trump has described them as ‘utterly rampant’, intimating possible federal intervention. As per earlier revelations by Reuters, the arrival of the National Guard doesn’t categorically mean they will have arresting powers.

The primary role of these forces would likely be provision of assistance to local law enforcement personnel or enabling them to undertake regular surveillance operations. Coinciding with this, the Trump administration intends to momentarily shift approximately 120 F.B.I. agents in Washington to nocturnal patrol assignments in a bid to bolster the President’s crackdown on crime.

Most of these aforementioned agents will be plucked from their habitual responsibilities at the F.B.I.’s D.C. field office. The tentative activation of troops within Washington is not without precedent and follows the sumer deployment of nearly 5,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles.

Their mission in LA was designed to help mitigate protests sparked by immigration raid controversies and to safeguard the federal agents responsible for conducting these. All but a residual force of about 250 out of these troops have been withdrawn since.

During his initial tenure, President Trump elicited the support of National Guard soldiers and federal law enforcement to manage peaceful protests during the surge of Black Lives Matter demonstrations sparked by the police-related homicide of George Floyd in 2020.

In a unique quirk of jurisdiction, the Governor of the District of Columbia lacks authorities over the National Guard, thereby offering the President considerable flexibility to order deployments of these forces.
