A U.S. fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone on Tuesday after it made an aggressive approach toward the USS Abraham Lincoln while the carrier was operating roughly 500 miles off Iran’s southern coast in international waters. The incident marked the latest in a series of escalating provocations by Tehran.
U.S. Central Command confirmed the downing, stating the drone’s “unclear intent” triggered defensive action despite multiple de-escalatory signals from the American vessel. The Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, forms the core of a newly deployed strike group to the region, adding over 5,700 U.S. service members to bolster maritime security.
Just hours after the drone confrontation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — officially designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. — harassed a U.S.-flagged oil tanker, the Stena Imperative, as it passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC deployed two fast boats and a Mohajer drone at high speed toward the American-crewed tanker, threatening to board the vessel.
The USS McFaul, a guided-missile destroyer, intervened alongside U.S. Air Force aircraft to shield the Stena Imperative and escort it safely through the strait. U.S. officials said the swift response successfully prevented escalation.
“CENTCOM forces are operating at the highest levels of professionalism and ensuring the safety of U.S. personnel, ships, and aircraft in the Middle East,” said CENTCOM spokesperson Col. Joe Hawkins. “Continued Iranian harassment and threats in international waters and airspace will not be tolerated.”
The deployment of the Abraham Lincoln strike group represents a clear show of force as tensions continue to mount between President Donald Trump’s administration and the Iranian regime. The buildup follows Iran’s brutal crackdown on pro-freedom protesters, with reported civilian death tolls exceeding 36,000 in recent months.
Despite the rising stakes, the Trump administration has signaled a willingness to engage diplomatically. U.S. officials are expected to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday, though the effectiveness of such talks remains uncertain in light of Tehran’s continued aggression in international waters.
