However, two players from the Indianapolis Colts, Devonta Davis and Tyler Kahmann, remain hopeful of swaying the odds in their favor in Indianapolis. Take Devonta Davis for example, he was never expected to come this far in his football journey. It’s unprecedented in his hometown – nobody’s ever done that. Born and raised in Union Springs, Alabama, a town with just 3,358 residents according to the 2020 census, did not offer him the exposure most players enjoy growing up in big cities.
In a town where the median household income is a meager $25,828, getting an opportunity to perform in the league is an extraordinary feat, ‘It’s a feat unheard of in my town,’ Davis remarked. ‘I would be the first ever.’ Although Davis left out details about the tragic death of his brother, he made a solemn promise to honor his memory, especially as he strives to secure his place in the Colts’ opening day group. He carries his brother’s spirit as the torchbearer of his ambitions, spurring him to push his limits every day.
Strewn with obstacles yet holding a glimmer of hope, the path becomes even more intriguing for the likes of Tyler Kahmann. It’s a journey that has been shaped under the bustle of an already bustling and entrenched receiving room in Indianapolis. Despite these challenges, Kahmann has managed to turn heads in training, especially during the team sessions with the third team. This 24-year-old player has already formed a promising relationship on the field with the third-string quarterback and former Notre Dame idol, Riley Leonard. Their chemistry has been evident in multiple long-range receptions they’ve successfully executed together.
His journey from being a rookie to this point hasn’t gone unnoticed. The fact that Kahmann has quickly become acclimatized to his new teammates and the Colts’ guidebook, barring a spring hiccup, has surprised some of the tougher critics. His stellar performances depict not only his dominance but illustrate the football history he’s authored. Before joining the Colts, Kahmann had an illustrious stint at Emporia State where he holds multiple records. These include the highest number of catches in a single season (101), most receiving yards in one season (1,488), most receiving TDs in a single season (20, which he achieved twice), the most catches in a career (281), most receiving yards in an entire career (3,661) and maximum receiving TDs during a career (54). In essence, Kahmann has etched his name as one of the most influential receivers to ever don the Emporia State jersey.
There were of course questions and rumors around his decision to remain at Emporia State despite his early breakout season. His admirers questioned whether he was holding himself back from potential greater success by remaining at the same institution where he began his football journey. The speculation wasn’t baseless, Kahmann had a standout season during 2023, where he accomplished 101 catches for a total of 1,234 yards and made 20 touchdowns. Could he have aimed higher? Possibly. But his decision to stay at Emporia State wasn’t a result of lack of aspiration. It was a testament to the allegiance he held towards the place that had nurtured him, and his commitment to his own honesty.
‘Everyone dreams of being in the NFL. Everyone aspires to it,’ confessed Kahmann. ‘But for me, it wasn’t a specific objective until like my junior year of college.’ His words represented not just his journey, but the journey of all undrafted rookies who start off with uncertain futures but steep dreams, learning to adapt, survive, and to fight the odds in the hope of not just playing the game, but rewriting the playbook.
