The Pentagon has made a public announcement declaring the cessation of the disputed posting of 700 US Marines in Los Angeles. Just a month ago, President Donald Trump enforced a directive that brought thousands of National Guard and several hundreds of Marines to Los Angeles. The president’s order was a direct response to the protests sparked by federal immigration raids. Nonetheless, California’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, and administration officials of the city openly showed their resistance to this decision.
Pete Hegseth, the Defense Secretary, has played a key role in revoking the deployment of the 700 Marines in the city. By doing so, he made it clear that actions disrupting public order would not go unchecked. This robust message was conveyed by Pentagon’s spokesperson, Sean Parnell, during an official statement. Parnell commended the Marines for their seamless response, steady discipline, and distinguished roles in reinstating order, which he said were key to maintaining the rule of law.
Karen Bass, the Mayor of Los Angeles, also publicly acknowledged the Marines’ withdrawal through a post on social media platform X. She described the decision as an additional triumph for the people of the city. Expressing relief, she declared that the Marines’ deployment in Los Angeles was an unnecessary act.
The movement to draw back the Marines follows closely behind another Pentagon announcement from the previous week. The statement revealed that the Defense Secretary, Hegseth, had commanded the withdrawal of 2,000 National Guard troops from Los Angeles. This effectively reduced the existing troops in the city by around half.
Los Angeles is known as a ‘sanctuary city,’ protecting a huge population of undocumented individuals amounting to hundreds of thousands. Since resuming office in January, Trump’s administration has kept a watchful eye over the city, considering its resistance to federal immigration laws.
The city witnessed a state of upheaval last month, owing to immigration enforcement raids. The tensions culminated in widespread protests, instigating President Trump — a leader known to amplify matters of concern — to dispatch National Guard and Marines personnel to curb the unrest.
It was a clear mark in history, as it had been since 1965 that a US president had acted against the desires of a state governor in deploying the National Guard. This unconventional decision by President Trump reflected his governance style, often marked by direct actions and an authoritative response in crisis.
