The United States military is getting ready to mobilize National Guard soldiers in Washington D.C. following indications that President Trump is considering intensifying his efforts to counter city-wide crime. While no formal deployment plans were greenlit by early Monday, the President is anticipated to declare during a White House press briefing that a significant number of D.C. National Guard personnel will bolster law enforcement resources in the nation’s capital. No additional information was available early Monday.
Despite crime rates experiencing a downward trend in the city of Washington, D.C., the president has expressed his belief that the situation is spiraling out of hand and has hinted at a potential federal intervention. The National Guard personnel, whose potential engagement was earlier reported by Reuters, would likely not be granted arresting powers.
The role of these troops would primarily be to provide backup and reinforcement to local law enforcement officials. Alternatively, their presence may enable law enforcement officers to devote their time and resources effectively on patrol duties, enhancing their capacity to maintain law and order.
In conjunction with these measures, President Trump’s administration also intends to assign 120 FBI agents in the city to night patrol duties temporarily as a part of the president’s plan to suppress crime. The decision affects the FBI agents’ usual work schedules, as most of them will be rerouted from their regular roles at the FBI’s office based in Washington D.C.
This move to activate troops in the capital follows on the heels of a similar deployment this summer, when approximately 5,000 National Guard soldiers were dispatched to Los Angeles. The deployment was in response to help manage protests organized in reaction to immigration raids and to ensure the safety of federal agents performing these raids.
Post deployment, all but around 250 of those National Guard servicemen have been pulled back. Such deployments demonstrate the administration’s willingness to use domestic military resources to manage civil situations.
In his initial term, President Trump has previously enlisted the help of National Guard and other federal law enforcement officers to suppress peaceful demonstrations during the Black Lives Matter protests catalyzed by the tragic death of George Floyd in 2020.
The District of Columbia stands unique in its relationship with the National Guard compared to other state territories in the nation. While a state governor typically has authority over the deployment of National Guard troops, Washington D.C. is not afforded this control.
This nuance signifies considerable power vested in the U.S. President to deploy such troops in the district. The potential engagement of the D.C. National Guard in the current scenarios further underscores this unique characteristic of Washington D.C.’s status.
