A Utah nurse is facing first-degree murder charges after authorities say she fabricated a terminal cancer diagnosis for her close friend in an elaborate scheme to cash in on a $1.5 million life insurance policy—a deception that ended in the woman’s tragic death.
47-year-old Meggan Randall Sundwall, a registered nurse from Highland, Utah, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder and obstruction of justice after police uncovered a disturbing plot that allegedly led to the death of 38-year-old Kacee Lyn Terry, a woman she had known for years.
A Fatal Lie Disguised as Compassion
According to investigators, Sundwall spent years convincing Terry that she was suffering from a terminal illness, despite Terry never being diagnosed with cancer or any major health issues. Thousands of text messages between the two women showed a chilling progression: Sundwall reportedly offered to help Terry “end her suffering,” all while manipulating her into believing she was dying.
On August 12, 2024, Sundwall allegedly administered a fatal dose of insulin, preceded by a sedative, at Terry’s home. Terry was found unresponsive later that day by her uncle and died at the hospital on August 15.
First responders found a diabetic syringe at the scene—yet Terry was not diabetic, according to medical records. An autopsy confirmed her cause of death as an overdose of insulin and other medications, and no evidence of cancer was found during the examination.
Evidence Points to Insurance Motive
Prosecutors say Sundwall was not only close to Terry personally—she was also listed as a beneficiary on a $1.5 million life insurance policy taken out just months before the alleged murder. In a further effort to cover her tracks, Sundwall reportedly deleted over 900 text messages from her phone after Terry’s death in an apparent attempt to obstruct the investigation.
Court documents revealed that Sundwall had researched the insurance policy, expressed interest in the payout, and repeatedly offered to assist with what she portrayed as an “end-of-life decision.”
Held Without Bail as Investigation Expands
Sundwall was taken into custody on March 20, 2025, and remains in jail without bail. If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison.
Prosecutors have described the case as a chilling abuse of both professional trust and personal friendship. “This wasn’t mercy,” one official stated. “This was manipulation and greed, disguised as compassion.”
A Devastating Betrayal
Family and friends of Kacee Lyn Terry are devastated by the revelations, saying they were unaware of any serious illness. Terry, described as kind and trusting, is now the tragic victim of a plot allegedly orchestrated by someone she considered a caregiver and friend.
As the case unfolds, the charges against Sundwall serve as a stark reminder of how professional authority can be weaponized—and how dangerous deception can become when fueled by financial greed.
