Vice President JD Vance delivered a blistering rebuke Thursday to left-wing figures who publicly sneered at prayer in the aftermath of the Minneapolis school shooting that left two children dead.
Appearing on Fox News, Vance condemned the attacks on faith as “a sickness of the soul” and called on those pushing such rhetoric to “get new politics.”
“If two beautiful babies are murdered while praying, and your instinct is to condemn prayer — not the evil behind the violence — then something is seriously wrong inside your soul,” said Vance. “You ought to get new politics.”

Psaki, Frey, and Newsom Slammed for Anti-Prayer Comments
Vance’s remarks came in response to a growing list of Democrat politicians and media pundits who’ve used the tragedy to mock faith-based responses and lash out at prayer itself.
Former Biden White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki took to social media to declare, “Prayer is not freaking enough,” adding that it doesn’t prevent school shootings or comfort grieving families.
Minneapolis Democrat Mayor Jacob Frey went even further, arguing that prayers were meaningless because the children were already praying when they were gunned down inside the church.
“These kids were literally praying. It was the first week of school, they were in a church,” Frey said. “Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom echoed the same narrative, targeting White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt for defending prayer.
“These children were literally praying as they got shot at,” Newsom posted on X.
Church and Families Call for Prayer — Not Politics
Despite the criticism from the political left, leaders at Annunciation Catholic Church urged Americans to turn to prayer—not politics.
“Please lift up these families and these children in prayer and surround them and each other with your love during this difficult time,” wrote the school’s principal Matthew DeBoer and Father Dennis Zehren in a letter to the community.
The trans-identifying shooter, Robin Westman, opened fire during morning Mass, killing two children and wounding 17 others before turning the gun on himself. Authorities say the attack is being investigated as an act of anti-Catholic domestic terrorism.
Vance, a devout Catholic and longtime defender of religious liberty, warned that the rush to politicize the tragedy by mocking prayer reflects a deep moral rot.
“We need to remember who we are. These children were in church. They were praying,” Vance said. “The answer isn’t less prayer — it’s more.”
