Security measures were heightened at Walden Galleria on Thursday evening due to past instances of post-Christmas disruption and misconduct. Cheektowaga law enforcement maintained vigilance to prevent any possible turmoil within the premises. The local community had been aflutter with speculations stemming from social media about prior Boxing Day unrest that supposedly led to multiple arrests and an early shut-down of the shopping complex.
However, Cheektowaga Police Department’s Captain Jeffrey Schmidt moved towards dispelling these rumors. He stated that the mall was already scheduled to shut down at 7 p.m. when security personnel sought police assistance to help clear the central hallway. He further clarified that this operation did not result in any arrests, and stores featuring outside entrances were allowed to keep their operations running.
Adding to the anticipation of a day that has often caused difficulties in the past for Walden Galleria, the decision to set an early closing time was taken. Interestingly, violent incidents appeared to be minimal on the day, with only one arrest related to violence reported.
Capt. Schmidt did disclose an earlier incident during the day involving a 30-year-old man who reportedly resisted giving his identification after assaulting an officer. As is typical during the holiday season, a number of arrests were made on charges of theft.
Normally guarded by a pair of officers from the local force, the mall had the presence of eight or more officers on Thursday. In a decision taken with foresight, the assistance of state police and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority officers had also been requested. Furthermore, additional private security personnel were deployed by the mall.
Although they managed to stave off significant trouble on the day, both Cheektowaga police force and the Galleria security are geared to keep strict regulations in place until January 3rd. Any individuals aged below 18 are required to be chaperoned by a parent or guardian who is 21 years or older after 1 p.m.
This adjustment in policy marks a deviation from the standard regulation – pre-holiday season – of requiring a 21 years or older custodian to accompany youngsters after 4 p.m. on weekends. However, the eligibility for an individual adult’s guardianship capped at five minors.
The recurring issue, as emphasized by Capt. Schmidt, is of untamed youngsters. He identified that the primary source of their difficulties were these unsupervised juveniles. ‘It is this element that is the catalyst for the majority of our problems’, the captain succinctly put.
The Walden Galleria, acknowledged as the region’s premier shopping hub, must confront numerous challenges as it plans for the future. The rising trend of online shopping, dwindling in-person customer traffic, and lagging revenue have raised speculations about the mall’s viability in a market increasingly shifting towards town center shopping and forthcoming lifestyle projects in neighboring Clarence.
The regulations regarding the necessity of adult accompaniment were violated on a few occasions, and the violators were ousted from the mall by the security. Capt. Schmidt recognized that while the majority of the youth act responsibly, a small portion intent on causing mischief often stoke disorder.
He observed that conflicts related to street gangs, school rivalries, and interpersonal drama often inflame the situation further. Schmidt pointed out that youngsters around the ages of 14-16 are more likely to stir up trouble than senior high school and first-year college students.
Schmidt also highlighted the broader range of legal options available to deal with those over 18 years old. The Captain urged parents to play a more proactive role to help manage these younger potential violators. In light of the existing circumstances and legal limitations, Schmidt emphasized the importance of parental involvement more than ever.
The Cheektowaga captain commended the Walden Galleria for formulating a robust safety strategy. He also acknowledged the mall’s consideration for compensating the Town of Cheektowaga for the deployment of additional officers during the holiday season.
