White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blasted Democrats and members of the media on Thursday for spreading rhetoric that she says is fueling violence against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The comments came in response to escalating protests in Minneapolis following a recent federal agent-involved shooting.
Holding up a CNN headline reading “Protests Erupt After Federal Agent Shoots Man In Minneapolis,” Leavitt declared, “That’s not the story.”
She pointed to an official DHS statement that provided a different account of the incident: “This ICE agent was executing a targeted operation against a Venezuelan illegal alien who was unlawfully present in this country,” she said. “When this ICE agent tried to detain the individual, three more of his comrades came rushing out of the house and started ambushing and attacking the ICE agent. They used a shovel or a broom to smash his face in, and so yes, that agent had to use self-defense and take up his weapon to protect his own life.”
Leavitt emphasized that ICE agents are “simply trying to enforce the law” and called out Democratic leaders for stoking hostility. “Elected officials are encouraging violence against our brave men and women in law enforcement,” she said, referencing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and others who have condemned ICE in harsh terms.
Tensions flared further when a reporter questioned how DHS Secretary Kristi Noem could say ICE was doing “everything correctly” when Renee Good had been shot in the head. Leavitt fired back: “Oh, okay, so you’re a biased reporter with a left-wing opinion. … Do you have the numbers of how many American citizens were killed at the hands of illegal aliens who ICE is trying to remove from this country? I bet you don’t.”
“Shame on you and the people of the media who have a crooked and biased view,” she added.
Leavitt called on Democratic officials to “sit down and have a cup of coffee with an ICE agent or a Border Patrol agent” to understand the reality of what they face on the ground. “These are great, patriotic men and women who have families who put on the uniform every day and are following our nation’s immigration laws at the direction of their bosses,” she said.
She also accused the Democrat Party of comparing ICE agents to Nazis and the Gestapo, labeling that type of rhetoric as dangerous and directly responsible for rising unrest.
“This is not about policy differences,” she said. “This is about whether we support the rule of law and the people who risk their lives every day to uphold it.”
As the White House doubles down on support for federal agents, ICE and DHS have warned that politically motivated attacks are on the rise — with some officials now in hiding due to violent threats.
