In the world of mixed martial arts, Khabib Nurmagomedov has twice tasted defeat, at least when it comes to individual rounds. Interestingly, Justin Gaethje, often referred to as ‘The Highlight’, is responsible for one of those instances. Gaethje’s style exemplifies destruction and power, features not ordinarily witnessed in the sport. With each fight in the Octagon, his reputation and legend grow steadily stronger. Yet, speculation continues to swirl that Gaethje may soon depart from the world of professional fighting.
The rumours last flared up when Gaethje hinted at possibly leaving the arena of mixed martial arts. Or so we thought until the relatively new fighter, Arman Tsarukyan, decided to provoke the veteran. Gaethje’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, asserts that Gaethje feels his dedication and service to the UFC should be merited with respect and appreciation. Is it too much to ask that his MMA journey, which is marked by some uproarious battles and impressive showings, be respected to such a degree?
According to Gaethje, the next significant juncture in his career should ideally be a title match, in recognition of his illustrious journey thus far. For him, there seem to be two choices – engage in the title fight he feels he’s earned or bid farewell to the world of MMA on his own terms. In response to this assertion, Tsarukyan sent out a congratulatory message to Gaethje, alluding to the latter’s imminent retirement.
The intimation from the emerging Armenian fighter, Tsarukyan, was that the UFC might not agree to give Gaethje a shot at the title. Nevertheless, there are many who hold the conviction that Gaethje has done more than enough to garner a title match, if you consider the track record and soul-stirring clash narratives he has invested in the Octagon.
Jon Anik, however, revealed that Gaethje felt somewhat disheartened when UFC opted for Charles Oliveira over him for the match against Topuria. As noted by Anik, Gaethje, backed by his manager Ali Abdelaziz, is currently in search of an explicit pledge from UFC – an indication that he would be permitted the next title opportunity.
As this situation continues to evolve, eager fans and professional commentators alike will be paying keen attention. Will UFC honour Gaethje’s remarkable career with an opportunity to compete for the title? Alternatively, will Gaethje decide to end his career under his own conditions?
Gaethje has been quite transparent about his intentions. He has no interest in just being a name in the roster or seen as a placeholder. Every engagement he steps into must mean something substantial, and now the next move is dependent on the UFC’s response.
