A woman in her thirties was taken into custody after she allegedly drove her vehicle into a collection of individuals protesting against the operations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that took place in Chicago earlier this June, as reported by local law enforcement. This woman was later identified by the law enforcement agency of Chicago as Deirdre Kemp. In accordance with the information available in the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Kemp was arrested and recorded on the 20th of June.
The charges that have been filed against Kemp extend to include serious breaches such as aggravated reckless driving resulting in bodily harm. Charges also cover fleeing from the police in an aggravated manner, and the operation of a motor vehicle under suspension of driving privileges, as per the reports from the police department.
Video footage which was captured live by local station WBBM, reportedly delineated the occurrence when Kemp was alleged to have driven into the collection of individuals who had assembled to protest on the 10th day of June. Piecing together the fragments of the recorded footage, it depicted the flurry of activity as individuals tried to evade the maroon-colored sedan which Kemp was driving on the street.
During this terrifying occurrence, injuries were inflicted on a 66-year-old protestor, as per several news reports. The injured woman, named Heather Blair, provided her statement to FOX 32. She recounted her position on the road at the time she was hit, although she was unable to recall the precise chain of events.
In her retelling of the incident, Blair recalled that she did remember noticing the oncoming vehicle heading in her direction. Her husband, she recalls, managed to avoid being hit by the car. She then began to lose a track of the subsequent events, which she thinks might be due to her blacking out. She later discovered that she had sustained a fracture in her arm during the incident.
Derived from court documents, certain reports allude to the presence of three minors inside the vehicle which was driven by Kemp at the time of the incident. The said report also made a reference to Kemp’s existing legal status, revealing that she was under the conditions of a bond related to a previous charge for a violent felony.
This particular group of protestors, who found themselves victim to this incident, were part of a larger assembly that had congregated to voice their dissent against the enforcement actions taken by customs and law enforcement personnel throughout the city and its adjacent areas.
The protest was characterized by chanting, with the protestors articulating their collective message vocally, and visually conveyed by placards. These placards, held by the protestors as they marched on the street, were inscribed with messages echoing the sentiment of the protest.
‘Halt the raids’ was the message starkly put across on one such placard. The sense of solidarity and reciprocal protest actions were also observed to be exhibited across other regions across the country over the past few weeks, with similar protests against ICE enforcement action cropping up in places like Los Angeles.
