The global authority on curling, World Curling, has recently announced the commencement of applications for their Sports Media Trainee Programme for the 2025-2026 curling season. This venture is designed to provide promising sports media hopefuls with a unique opportunity to gain indispensable, on-the-job experience at international-level curling events. Internship positions that have been opened up include two key roles: Communications Assistant and Photographer.
The role of the Communications Assistant Trainee will involve producing engaging content for various social media platforms, conducting interviews with the athletes, and penning competition reports. On the other hand, the Photographers Trainee will have the opportunity to capture the heart of the event through their lenses; thereafter, they will be expected to edit, choose and broadcast the best images from these events.
Both the communications and photography trainees will see their work distributed on world-known platforms. World Curling is on the lookout for passionate individuals between the age group of 18 to 35, who share deep interest and love for sports and either writing and content creation or photography. The application deadline will help ascertain the eligible age for applicants.
It noteworthy that potential applicants are not required to be currently pursuing formal education in order to be eligible for this programme. The successful candidates can look forward to the opportunity of participating in one of the 2025 World Curling events. Some of the events lined up for 2025 include the Pan Continental Curling Championships in Virginia, Minnesota, United States, set to take place from the 19th to the 26th October, as well as Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships in Lohja, Finland, scheduled from 22nd to 29th November.
Another exciting feature of the program is that World Curling has committed to bear all the travel, accommodation and incidental costs related to the program for the chosen trainees. These provisions mean that each trainee will be free to focus on learning, experimenting and excelling in their tasks without worrying about the financial aspects of the experience.
There are certain prerequisites to be considered for the selection process. Candidates must be born between 14 June 1989 and 13 June 2007. A basic level of qualification is a high school degree or its equivalent. Applicants must have a strong command of the English language, encompassing fluent spoken, written and comprehension skills.
Noteworthy, an ardent interest in sports is vital along with readiness to travel overseas solo, and work in an international and multi-cultural milieu. Whilst teamwork is critical, successful applicants should also possess the ability to work autonomously when the need arises. They should also be able to function under time limitations and adeptly handle task priority management in a high-paced setting.
Additionally, the successful candidates should be open to guidance, feedback and able to work in collaboration with mentors and other members of their team, upholding the virtues of flexibility and adaptability. As part of a more diverse and inclusive policy, World Curling has emphasised the importance of gender balance, and geographical balance as significant factors in the selection process.
The application process has certain specific requirements. In particular, prospective photographers are required to append a collection of ten sports-oriented images to their application, along with a brief rationale behind the chosen photos. This will provide an insight into their understanding of the sport and their abilities as a photographer.
As part of the application process, Communication Assistant hopefuls are required to complete two tasks. The first task underlines their writing capabilities and involves crafting a 400-600 word essay on either their most memorable Olympic moment and why it holds such a place in their heart or their first Olympic memory and how it has significantly influenced them.
The second task requires candidates to meticulously complete their application and meet the submission deadline promptly. This is not just a test of their organization and time management skills, but also a reflection of their dedication and seriousness towards the distinctive opportunity that the programme presents. The deadline for the application is firmly set, and any applications received outside of this window will not be considered for the programme.
