Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Turkey this week to press forward with ceasefire negotiations, despite key absences that have cast doubt on the seriousness of the discussions. Instead, Putin opted to skip the talks entirely, sending a lower-level delegation led by his presidential aide, Vladimir Medinsky. President Trump, who had previously expressed interest in attending if Putin did, also declined to take part in the talks. Trump made clear that he views direct engagement between himself and Putin as the only path toward meaningful resolution, stating, “Nothing’s going to happen until Putin and I get together.” The absence of both men has raised questions about whether the talks can yield any concrete outcome.
Still, Zelensky remains undeterred. He held a private meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an and reiterated his call for a 30-day ceasefire to jump-start broader peace negotiations. The Ukrainian leader framed the visit as a symbol of his country’s commitment to finding a diplomatic path forward—even if Russia and others aren’t ready to do the same.
