Becerra Claims Health Secretary Seat Amidst Biden’s Chaos

Xavier Becerra stepped onto a battlefield of chaos, as he assumed the role of the health secretary under Joe Biden, amidst a raging global pandemic in 2021. His words capture the somber mood, ‘The day President Biden was sworn in, we essentially lost 10 jumbo jets of Americans.’ Consequently, after resigning from the tumultuous position in less than half a year, he observes his efforts at the Department of Health and Human Services systematically dismantled by successor Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Becerra, a product of Sacramento, and the once emissary of Downtown Los Angeles in the House of Representatives for over two decades, jumps headlong into the high-risk scene of California governance. Before his time at HHS, Becerra held the title of California attorney general. His claim to the governor’s chair is his legislative history and experience in leading a huge body like HHS, though his arguments seem completely disconnected from everyday Californians.

The political battlefield, however, is rife with obstacles. There’s incessant gossip regarding a possible run by former vice president Kamala Harris, presenting a major obstacle, given her strong pull among career politicians. Moreover, accusatory voices are mounting about senior Biden administration officials glossing over the president’s health deterioration during his tenure, a factor that significantly affects the voter’s perception.

‘This has aged everybody. The biggest concern for me is the eroding trust in our elected leaders.’ These cynical words from Becerra highlight the drain of confidence among citizens. And as he rightly suggests, the current administration’s bizarre undermining of the importance of vaccines, hinting that pregnant women and children may not need vaccination anymore, is baffling.

Becerra elaborated on his skepticism of the vaccination policy changes saying, ‘These aren’t the types of recommendations that I was used to.’ This begins to paint a picture of an administration that seems to lack a clear or effective strategy for managing ongoing public health challenges, further weakening the public’s faith.

During his tenure as attorney general in California, Becerra took an openly combative stance against the Trump administration, frequently challenging them in court. He now poses the rhetorical query about his future role as Governor, suggesting he would stand up against administration actions he sees as detrimental to Californians. The state deserves better than fighting political battles, though.

His stance on immigration seems to be as conflicted as his other promises, given the previous administration’s crackdown on the issue. Becerra proposed the question about his own role as Governor, in terms of safeguarding the immigrant community. His statement, ‘I don’t think it escapes anyone that I’m the son of immigrants. Defending immigrants is a no-brainer,’ is a questionable stance to leverage personal ancestry for political gains.

While the son-of-immigrants narrative might appeal to a certain demographic, it reduces the complex issue of immigration to a simple, emotional argument. He promises to protect everyone, insisting that ‘you don’t have to be a citizen to have a constitutional right to due process.’ However, his declaration seems to lack a concrete plan in dealing with the real crisis affecting both immigrants and citizens alike.
