The Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States released its report on Thursday, saying that the US is ill-equipped to handle the growing nuclear threat from China and Russia. China’s answer to a recent U.S. assessment assessing the likelihood of simultaneous conflicts against Beijing and Moscow has been to warn the United States that “those who play with fire will perish by it.”
According to the 145-page research, “unless its leaders make decisions now, the United States is ill-prepared for this existential challenge.” The report was written by a bipartisan team of six Democrats and six Republicans following a year-long research into the subject.
According to the research, the actions of China and Russia are “militarily troubling and increasingly aggressive,” which has raised the “risk of conflict between two nuclear peers.” By the mid-30s, China is expected to achieve nuclear parity with the US, according to the assessment.
The report explores the possibilities of an alliance between China and Russia against the United States, analyzing a worst-case scenario. The experts advise American authorities to hasten military modernization and change the country’s strategic posture.
But talks of a possible confrontation with the US seem to have incited anger and bitterness in Beijing. This was clarified in a recent piece that appeared in the Global Times, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) official journal.
The newspaper responds to the article by saying, “It is deeply unsettling that the idea of ‘preparing for possible simultaneous wars with Russia and China,’ once considered a fringe fantasy, has gradually made its way into Washington’s agenda.”
The article goes on to say that “the harm and threats to world peace could be immeasurable and would ultimately backfire on the U.S. itself if Washington were to adopt even a small portion of this report’s recommendations.”
“There is an old Chinese proverb that states, ‘Those who play with fire will perish by it,’” the author warns readers. Washington ought to give this some serious thought.”
The piece called the bipartisan study “a disastrous step backwards in history” and denounced it as reckless for “promoting a nuclear arms race under the banner of ‘deterrence.’”
The study went on to say that China’s danger was overstated in the US report and that there was serious doubt about China’s intentions behind inciting a state of war.
However, while its rivals are increasing their arsenals, America’s nuclear weapons stockpile has stalled.
A 2022 research by the Heritage Foundation gives background information on America’s nuclear arsenal since the start of the Atomic Age.
