Cory Booker Turns On Democrats, Says Party ‘Desperately Needs New Leadership’

Sen. Cory Booker unloaded on Democratic leadership Sunday, saying his party has been failing voters for years and “desperately needs new leadership” following the chaotic rollout of the Democratic National Committee’s 2024 election autopsy report.

Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the New Jersey Democrat openly criticized the Democratic National Committee for releasing what many Democrats themselves described as a sloppy, incomplete, and embarrassing postmortem on the party’s crushing 2024 election defeat.

“The DNC has got to do a lot better if they’re going to meet this moment in history,” Booker said.

“The Democratic Party desperately needs new leadership,” he added. “I have had frustrations … with the Democratic Party for a long time.”

Booker’s comments come as infighting inside the Democratic Party continues intensifying following President Donald Trump’s sweeping 2024 victory and Republicans’ continued momentum across key battleground states.

The draft autopsy report, prepared by longtime Democratic strategist Paul Rivera, sparked outrage after it was finally released under pressure last week.

The document was reportedly riddled with typographical errors, missing sections, questionable data, and a lack of sourcing. Critics inside the party also blasted the report for barely addressing concerns about former President Joe Biden’s age and cognitive fitness while largely ignoring fallout surrounding the Israel-Hamas war.

DNC Chairman Ken Martin himself admitted the draft was not “ready for primetime.”

The fallout has only deepened frustrations among Democrats already furious over the party’s direction, messaging failures, and leadership struggles.

Still, Booker attempted to steer attention away from internal party warfare and toward broader policy concerns.

“What is going to make the Republicans gleeful is if we’re talking about each other in the Democratic Party and not talking about the realities that Americans are facing,” Booker said.

When pressed on which Democratic leaders should step aside, Booker refused to name names and specifically denied he was targeting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Instead, Booker argued Democrats must reconnect with struggling Americans facing rising costs and economic uncertainty.

“I am tired of all this machination about party politics,” Booker said. “We are in a crisis right now, millions of Americans losing their health insurance, their costs skyrocketing.”

“You can damn well be sure that I’m going to be talking about what our party needs to do to change,” he added.

Booker’s unusually blunt criticism highlights growing panic among Democrats ahead of the upcoming midterm elections as the party struggles to rebuild after its devastating 2024 losses.

The senator himself faces reelection this November as Republicans continue aggressively targeting blue-state Senate seats they believe could become competitive amid the party’s ongoing turmoil.
