According to officials on Sunday, at least four Americans have died in the unexpected terror strike by Hamas on Israel close to the Gaza border.
As per an official US government memo that CNN was able to get, there are still a number of unaccounted for US citizens.
The four deceased Americans’ identities are still unknown.
Following many coordinated attacks by Hamas at the border, Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier on Sunday stated that his office was investigating the number of American fatalities and unaccounted for in Israel.
“Yes, we have reports that several Americans were killed. We’re working overtime to verify that,” Blinken told CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“At the same time, there are reports of missing Americans and there again, We’re working to verify those reports,” he added without providing an estimate.
During Saturday’s attack, the US Embassy in Jerusalem issued an order for Americans to “shelter in place,” and the embassy updated its backup plans “for any potential evacuation by land or air.”
The “war” claimed the lives of over 700 Israelis and injured over 2,000 others. The office of the Israeli prime minister also revealed that the terrorist organization had abducted over 100 hostages.
Since then, Israel has formally declared war on Palestine and carried out retaliatory assaults, which have also resulted in civilian casualties.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reports that 1,990 Palestinians are missing and about 370 Palestinians have been killed.
Along with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s announcement on Sunday that the US will give the Israel Defense Forces more weapons and resources, Blinken stated that the US will support its ally Israel in its fight against Hamas.
