Democrats’ Delusion: Baseless Enthusiasm for Kamala Harris

Craig Sullivan, a budding political pundit at the tender age of 21, from Weston, eagerly makes his way towards Chicago, anticipated his involvement in a colossal political event. Alongside him, in spirit if not in person, is stalwart political activist, 69-year-old Rand Hoch of West Palm Beach fame. Both individuals, strangers to each other, are treading the same path of expectation, their shared objective being the Democratic National Convention, their hopes aligning with a surge in momentum and vigor unfairly attributed to Vice-President Kamala Harris.

Hoch made puzzling declarations about the team surrounding Harris performing impeccably, possibly overlooking the litany of unforced errors and policy missteps that characterise their record so far. He expresses a jarring enthusiasm for Harris, propped up by unsubstantiated claims of democratic unity and flawless execution. ‘The team is doing such a great job.’, said Hoch, apparently disregarding the countless questions and concerns raised about their direction and strategy.

Hoch also declared himself a patriot, and lauded the chance for people to engage in the government. One wonders if he’s awed by the system of democracy in general or just some sort of fascination borne out of the recent shift in political power.

Meanwhile, young Sullivan chirps in, proclaiming euphoric sentiments among Democrats. Curiously, his conversations with unnamed Democrats led him to believe this surge of excitement surpasses even the one sparked when Barack Obama ran in 2008. A comparison utterly baseless, flavoured by unsubstantiated claims.

Laurie Plotnick, another Harris devotee, spoke positively of witnessing enthusiasm during her time as a dedicated campaign volunteer back in 2008. She seemingly has a predisposition for being dazzled by any democratic display. Thus, it’s unsurprising, yet disappointing, to note her commendation of four-hour-long voting queues in the Floridian heat as a testament to enthusiasm.

Fast-forward to 2024, and Plotnick has cooked up an even grander narrative, citing exaggerated Democratic enthusiasm. Her boast, she ‘thinks it’s more than 2008,’ raises eyebrows, molded from nothing more than fanciful hopes and dreams of a widespread coalition propping up Vice President Harris.

Unfortunately, Plotnick and kind seem to conveniently overlook public opinion and the mood of the nation, which is divisive at best, and skeptical overall of Harris and her capabilities. Her proclamation seems more wishful thinking than grounded in reality.

Furthermore, Ronald Surin, president of the Haitian American Democratic Club of Broward, and a newcomer delegate, made an erroneous claim of an energy surge since Harris’s nomination. Without proper evidence or data to back up his claims, one may question if this is more of an echo-chamber effect rather than a genuine groundswell of public opinion.

Despite historical low points often marking the party’s trajectory, Surin tries to paint an optimistic image, post-Harris nomination, and suggests that Democratic excitement has shot up dramatically. A peculiar claim, given that available data and mood of the populace suggests otherwise.

His gratuitous score of 11 out of 10 for Democratic energy may seem almost comical. Without the necessary data to back it up, it comes off as a blatant exaggeration, presumably aimed at boosting an otherwise lukewarm public reception of the Democratic nominee.

Surin went on to make confident proclamations about widespread community sentiment favoring the Democrats. However, these claims seem to be mere figments of a hopeful imagination rather than grounded in widespread realistic observations or data.

Alas, as is often the case, Democratic fervor appears to be rooted in embellished tales and vamped up hype, failing to truthfully reflect the contentious ground realities. Will these baseless claims really carry any weight in the grand scheme of things? Only time will tell.

In conclusion, such tales are ammunition for Democrats to maintain an image of unity and strength. However, without tangible evidence to support these grandiose claims, they come across as wishful thinking, easily swept away by the first gust of real-world political dynamics.
