Democrats are rolling out a new initiative called “Project 2029,” an effort to create a comprehensive governing agenda for the party’s next presidential nominee in an approach modeled after the conservative Project 2025 blueprint that helped shape President Donald Trump‘s second administration.
The project is designed to give the eventual Democratic nominee a ready-made collection of policy proposals ahead of the 2028 election. Organizers say they want Democrats to move beyond simply opposing President Trump and instead present voters with a clear vision for governing.
Project 2029 focuses on issues including affordability, child care, technology, and government efficiency. One proposal, called “Kids over Clicks,” would ban children under 16 from using what organizers describe as addictive social media apps, impose stricter privacy protections, regulate AI chatbots used by minors, prohibit cellphones during the school day, and restrict targeted advertising aimed at teenagers.
Another proposal targets what organizers call the “annoyance economy,” seeking tougher enforcement against robocalls, spam texts, junk fees, and other consumer frustrations. The plan also calls for simplifying insurance claims and making customer service interactions less burdensome.
Project 2029 also proposes a major expansion of child care benefits by guaranteeing families either free child care or a monthly $1,000 payment if a parent or caregiver chooses to stay home with young children. Organizers argue the policy would provide families with greater flexibility while easing one of the biggest financial pressures facing parents.
The initiative comes as Democrats continue searching for a unified message following their 2024 election defeat and ongoing divisions ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Potential 2028 presidential contenders include former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Not everyone is convinced Project 2029 will have the same impact as its conservative counterpart. Some political analysts argue the effort lacks the clear ideological identity that made Project 2025 so influential, while organizers insist their goal is to unite Democrats around practical policy solutions rather than partisan messaging.
