Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has emerged as the largest known political donor of the 2026 midterm elections, pouring more than $276 million into Republican campaigns and political organizations since July as the GOP fights to maintain control of Congress.
The massive financial commitment comes just weeks before the November 3 elections, when Republicans will defend their majorities in both the House of Representatives and Senate. Musk’s spending has provided a substantial financial boost to Republican candidates facing competitive races across the country.
According to figures confirmed by representatives of Musk’s America PAC, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has contributed approximately $366 million throughout the current federal election cycle. That amount exceeds the roughly $290 million he spent during the 2024 election cycle, when he helped President Trump return to the White House.
The largest portion of Musk’s recent contributions went to the Senate Leadership Fund, a major Republican super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Musk donated an extraordinary $158 million to the organization, making it one of the largest known political contributions in American history.
The Senate Leadership Fund is using its resources to support Republican candidates in closely contested races, including efforts to defend the party’s majority in the upper chamber. The massive contribution has allowed the organization to expand advertising and other campaign activities during the final weeks before Election Day.
Another $76 million went to America PAC, the political organization Musk established during the 2024 presidential election. The group has developed an extensive voter outreach operation focused on increasing Republican turnout in seven competitive Senate states and nearly three dozen House races.
America PAC has invested heavily in door-to-door canvassing, voter registration outreach and efforts to encourage participation among Republican-leaning Americans who do not consistently vote in midterm elections.
The organization has reportedly deployed thousands of paid canvassers and contacted millions of households nationwide. Its strategy builds on the voter mobilization operation that Musk financed during Trump’s successful 2024 presidential campaign.
Musk also contributed $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a Republican super PAC associated with House Speaker Mike Johnson. The organization supports GOP House candidates through advertising and other independent campaign expenditures.
Another $10 million went to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which is supporting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Paxton is facing Democrat James Talarico in a closely watched race that has attracted substantial national attention.
Musk’s financial involvement in Texas is particularly significant because several of his major companies maintain extensive operations in the state. Tesla’s headquarters and major manufacturing facilities are located in Texas, while SpaceX operates its Starbase launch complex along the Gulf Coast.
Additional contributions included $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association. Those organizations are working to elect Republican candidates to important state-level offices across the country.
Andrew Romeo, a spokesman for America PAC, defended the enormous spending and warned about the consequences of Democrats gaining control of Washington and key state governments.
Romeo argued that Republican victories are necessary to prevent policies his organization associates with socialism, progressive cultural priorities and weakened border enforcement. He also said the investments have allowed Republican organizations to communicate their message to voters and compete in a difficult political environment.
The scale of Musk’s spending places him well ahead of other publicly identified individual donors during the current election cycle. Democratic megadonors George Soros and his son Alex Soros have contributed just over $100 million to Democratic political efforts, according to reported figures.
Musk’s renewed financial support for Republicans represents a major reversal from his public statements last year, when he suggested he would substantially reduce his political involvement.
During an appearance at the Qatar Economic Forum in May 2025, Musk said he intended to spend considerably less money on politics in the future. At the time, he indicated that he believed he had already contributed enough to political campaigns.
Those comments came during a period of growing tension between Musk and President Trump. The two men had developed a close political relationship during the 2024 election, but disagreements over federal spending and the administration’s domestic policy agenda eventually led to a public falling out.
Musk had previously played a prominent role in the Trump administration through the Department of Government Efficiency, commonly known as DOGE. The initiative sought to identify wasteful federal expenditures, reduce government bureaucracy and restructure certain federal operations.
Following his departure from the administration, Musk criticized Trump’s major tax-and-spending legislation and discussed creating a new political party. His announcement of the proposed America Party raised questions about whether he would continue supporting Republican candidates.
However, relations between Trump and Musk have improved significantly in recent months. The two have appeared together at public events, and the president recently presented Musk with the National Medal of Science during an October ceremony.
The renewed relationship has coincided with Musk’s return as a major Republican financial supporter. Although he has maintained a lower public profile than during the 2024 presidential campaign, his political spending has increased dramatically.
Unlike his previous campaign involvement, which included frequent appearances at Trump rallies and extensive political commentary on X, Musk has largely allowed America PAC and Republican political organizations to manage their election operations.
The billionaire’s contributions have also attracted criticism from Democrats, who argue that extremely wealthy donors exercise disproportionate influence over American elections. Some Democratic lawmakers have called for investigations into Musk’s federal government contracts and his previous role in the Trump administration.
Republicans, meanwhile, have emphasized the importance of competing financially with Democratic donors and organizations. Both parties rely heavily on outside political groups to fund advertising, voter outreach and other election activities.
Super PACs can accept unlimited contributions from individuals and corporations, although federal law prohibits them from coordinating their independent expenditures directly with candidates’ campaigns.
Musk’s spending is particularly consequential because Republicans face competitive contests in multiple states. Control of Congress will determine which party oversees legislative priorities, federal spending negotiations and congressional investigations during the remaining two years of Trump’s current term.
The enormous financial commitment has given Republican organizations additional resources to compete in races where advertising costs and voter mobilization efforts can require tens of millions of dollars.
Still, campaign spending alone does not guarantee electoral success. Candidate popularity, economic conditions, voter turnout and national political sentiment will also influence the results.
With Election Day approaching, Musk’s contributions have established him as one of the most influential financial participants in American politics. His $276 million investment since July, combined with his broader $366 million in election-cycle contributions, demonstrates the extraordinary scale of his involvement in Republican electoral efforts.
The spending also signals that Musk’s political partnership with Trump has recovered from last year’s disagreements. Despite previously promising to reduce his involvement, the billionaire has committed more money to the current election cycle than he did during the presidential contest that returned Trump to office.
As Republicans prepare for the final weeks of the midterm campaign, Musk’s financial support has become a major component of their efforts to defend congressional control and support GOP candidates in competitive races nationwide.
