Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is facing multiple charges after police say he acted “erratically” and violently attacked a 69-year-old grease truck driver before being stabbed in the chest in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday.
Authorities say Sanchez, 38, was doing wind sprints and drinking in the alley behind Loughmiller’s Pub when he allegedly confronted the driver over a blocked roadway. Surveillance footage and court documents paint a disturbing picture of what followed.
According to the driver’s account, Sanchez aggressively approached his vehicle, opened the door, and later body-slammed him against a hotel wall and then to the ground. The elderly man, fearing for his life, said he first tried to use pepper spray, but when that failed to stop Sanchez’s advance, he stabbed him in the chest in self-defense, reportedly saying: “This guy is trying to kill me.”
Surveillance footage from a nearby hotel allegedly shows Sanchez chasing the driver, slamming him into the wall of the Westin, and continuing the assault in the alley. Witnesses initially thought the two men were joking around until they noticed both were recording each other on their phones.
The driver, who suffered a facial laceration, was treated and released from Methodist Hospital. Sanchez underwent emergency surgery and remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Charges Filed
Sanchez has been formally charged with:
Battery resulting in injury
Unlawful entry of a motor vehicle
Public intoxication
He has not yet been booked into jail as he remains hospitalized.
According to a detective’s affidavit, Sanchez could not recall what happened during the incident. He told police he remembered “grabbing for a window” but did not know who stabbed him or where it happened.
Broadcast Plans Scrapped
Sanchez had been in Indianapolis to broadcast the Colts–Raiders game for Fox Sports. The network has confirmed his hospitalization and asked for privacy on behalf of his family.
This marks a dramatic turn for the former USC star and NFL quarterback, who was drafted by the Jets in 2009 and led the team to two AFC title games before retiring in 2019.
The case remains under active investigation, and prosecutors will determine if additional charges are warranted.
