Federal agents carried out a new wave of raids across the Minneapolis area Tuesday morning, targeting dozens of sites tied to an ongoing fraud investigation that officials say involves the misuse of taxpayer funds.
The operation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security Investigations, executed court-approved search warrants at more than 20 locations throughout the Twin Cities. Authorities confirmed the searches were part of a broader probe into alleged fraud involving government-funded programs.
Officials said the warrants focused on a range of businesses, including daycare centers and service providers that receive public funds. Among the locations reportedly searched was the Quality Learning Center, which had previously drawn scrutiny in connection with questionable billing practices.
In a statement, Homeland Security officials said the raids were tied to “rampant fraud of U.S. taxpayer dollars,” though they did not immediately announce any arrests. Law enforcement activity at several sites included the removal of documents and other materials believed to be relevant to the investigation.
The crackdown follows years of mounting concern over fraud tied to Minnesota-based programs, some of which expanded rapidly during the COVID-era funding surge. Federal investigators have been examining whether certain providers billed for services that were never delivered or inflated claims to secure larger payouts.
The effort has been backed by the Trump administration’s anti-fraud initiative, which has placed a particular focus on Minnesota. Vice President JD Vance has been involved in overseeing the initiative, which is reviewing multiple state-funded programs ranging from childcare services to medical transportation.
Supporters of the crackdown argue the raids are long overdue. Rep. Tom Emmer said taxpayers have been waiting for accountability after years of alleged abuse. He praised the administration’s actions, saying the federal government is sending a clear message that fraud will not be tolerated.
The investigation builds on earlier probes, including the high-profile case involving the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, which prosecutors accused of misusing pandemic relief funds intended to provide meals for children. That case drew national attention and highlighted vulnerabilities in oversight systems.
State leaders, including Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison, have faced criticism from some Republicans over their handling of fraud allegations, though both have said they support efforts to hold bad actors accountable.
Federal authorities say the investigation remains active, with additional actions possible as they review evidence gathered in the latest round of searches.
