Foxtel CEO Apologizes for Controversial Nazi Salute

The chief executive of an Australian cable TV corporation has issued an apology following a leaked picture of him doing a Nazi Party salute and impersonating Adolf Hitler emerged on the internet. The chief executive, Patrick Delaney, who currently runs Foxtel, a television service predominantly owned by News Corp, expressed deep regret for his actions. He issued a heartfelt apology to the individuals who felt distressed or insulted, particularly emphasizing the Jewish community.

The controversy erupted when an Australian news publication, Crikey, shared a photograph of Delaney enacting the salute. The act was committed behind the scenes while Delaney was still serving his tenure as Fox Sports’ CEO approximately a decade in the past. The photograph depicts Delaney extending his right arm, while using two fingers from his left hand positioned above his mouth to replicate Hitler’s iconic mustache.

In response to the controversy, Delaney purportedly released an internal memo wherein he claimed to be emulating a gesture typically seen amongst football enthusiasts. He admitted that such an act was wholly incompatible with his personal value system, core beliefs, and familial ties.

David Ossip, the President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, expressed acceptance towards Delaney’s apology. He spoke to ABC, underlining that Delaney comprehended the pain and insult caused by his action, regardless of the setting it was performed in.

Despite his apology, Delaney’s actions were roundly condemned by the Jewish Council of Australia. They emphasized the salute’s symbolism as a deeply offensive and aggressive act, not just for Jews but also for various racially marginalized communities.

Sarah Schwartz, the organization’s executive officer, delivered the council’s stance to the BBC. She elaborated on the concerns surrounding the incident, particularly considering Delaney’s influential position in the media industry where such acts should not be considered acceptably.
