Greta Thunberg, an advocate for the environment, has been charged by Sweden’s legal authorities with disobeying police instructions while participating in a climate march in Malmö in June.
Charges have been filed against a young woman who took part in a climate awareness march on June 19 according to the authorities. According to the prosecution, this rally caused traffic in Malmö to be disrupted. The woman in issue, they continued, “did not heed the police directive to vacate the site.”
Although Thunberg’s name was not mentioned by name in the statement, Annika Collin, a spokesperson of the Swedish Legal Authorities, told CNN that Thunberg was the individual being discussed.
“The crime is classified as defiance to law enforcement. The prosecutor states that the act was performed deliberately,” the statement further added.
According to a statement made by the legal authorities, Thunberg might be subject to a fine or a prison sentence of up to six months.
These claims are related to Thunberg’s participation in a protest organized by the activist group Ta Tillbaka Framtiden, which blocked oil ships in a section of the port of Malmö.

“Today, for the third consecutive day, young advocates from @tatillbakaframtiden have stopped oil tankers in the Malmö oil port. The climate emergency is already a matter of survival for innumerable individuals. We opt to not be observers but to physically interrupt the fossil fuel structure. We are recapturing the future,” Thunberg wrote on Instagram during the demonstration.
Irma Kjellström, a spokeswoman for Ta Tillbaka Framtiden, claimed that Thunberg was one of numerous young people impeding oil vessels. “Now that we have stopped the industry that is endangering our future, we are being charged with a crime. The crime is still being committed behind the gates we blocked while we are being accused of it, she told CNN.
During a protest against a planned coal mine expansion in Lützerath, Germany, in January, Thunberg was arrested by police. Later that day, she was released.
Thunberg recently had a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Thunberg has earned international reputation for her ominous climate change warnings. She used the phrase “ecocide” in this instance to charge Russian President Vladimir Putin with war crimes.
“Ecocide, the destruction of the environment, is a form of warfare,” Thunberg remarked during the meeting. “Unfortunately, Ukrainians now understand this very well. Russia deliberately targets its actions against the environment, against the livelihood of people.”

Climate firebrand Greta Thunberg became the latest of several prominent world figures to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week amid his nation’s ongoing war with Russia.
Thunberg traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital city, Thursday for the first meeting of the International Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War.
Thunberg was joined by other members of the working group, including co-chair Andriy Yermak and European Parliament Vice President Heidi Hautala in addition to a group of Ukrainian environmental activists.
