The former Vice President, Kamala Harris, took an opportunity to lambast President Donald Trump in what some may consider a misguided attempt to remain politically relevant. Casting unwarranted aspersions on Trump’s administration, Harris postulates that the ideals that America prides herself in are being abandoned en masse. This is her first endeavor to return to the political stage since losing to Trump in the elections last November, during which she had refrained from mentioning Trump by name.
In Harris’ critique, the tone revealed a palpable presence of tension and confusion amongst her limited base of supporters. Interestingly, she suggested that the administration intentionally works to instill fear among the masses, a conjecture seemingly born out of her own anxieties. Instead of facing the realities of her political loss, she shifted towards rhetoric about the contagious nature of courage, while strangely accusing her opponents of fearmongering tactics.
Harris rose to fame after she displaced Joe Biden as the head of the Democratic ticket. Despite her rise, she failed to make any significant impact on her party or voters, a fact underscored by Trump’s quip about knowing ‘nothing about her’. These remarks were backed up by the White House press secretary who humorously encouraged Harris to continue making public appearances.
In a misguided and often puzzling analysis of the Trump administration, Harris declared it as being the end-product of an extensive right-wing conspiracy to revamp the government completely rather than just an administration untidily navigating through difficult times. She suggested that a ‘high-velocity event’ was taking place, blaming it for everything from cutting education funding to reducing government size and privatising public services. Interestingly, she neglected to mention any of the benefits these policies might bring.
Harris decided to jump back into the political fray with a speech delivered to a friendly and seemingly agreeable audience at a gala held by Emerge America, an organization known for aiding Democratic women’s political ambitions. Despite the accommodating crowd, it does raise questions: Is she trying to regain lost ground, or is it an attempt to appease critics within her own party? Strategy or desperation, only time will tell.
Harris also lauded a few Democrats who have been vocally critical of Trump, mentioning a diverse range of politicians in a bid to capture some relevance. Opting for safety, she refrained from taking a precise stance on the most divisive issues within her party, leaving listeners with a vague sense of ambiguity and, at times, a lack of depth in her understanding of key issues.
While she made no clear predictions, Harris ominously hinted that situations might worsen before they improve. A message of doom and gloom may be great for a horror story, but in politics it often reveals a lack of vision and hope for efficient problem-solving.
Adding further uncertainty to her stunning lack of clarity, Harris refrained from hinting at any potential future runs in political office, neither ruling in nor ruling out any possibility. If vagueness was an art, she might just be its master.
However, Harris’s recent communications suggest that her intent lies in halting Trump’s agenda whilst championing Democrat candidates across the country. The question is, how effective can she be when she appears to be so out of touch with the majority of America’s realistic concerns?
Marking her political homecoming, Harris decided to host the event in Los Angeles, where she resides, although her roots lie within the San Francisco Bay Area. Selecting friendly territory for her first major speech post-election reveals as much about her need for support and validation as it does about her strategy moving forward.
