The city witnessed an unprecedented decline in the number of shootings and homicides within the first five months of the current year, showing levels of violence not observed in over thirty years, as reported on Tuesday. The notably peaceful month of May was characterized as the safest yet, with the lowest count of shootings and murders the city has seen since the inception of the CompStat system in 1994.
The effort and dedication put forth in the month of May have created a milestone in history, making 2025 potentially the most secure year in terms of shootings and homicides. Analytics revealed that May resulted in 54 shootings with 18 murders, setting an unrivaled standard for safety. These numbers indirectly surpass the safety record set during the Memorial Day weekend, considered as the least violent within the timeline of the CompStat system.
CompStat, which stands for ‘computer statistics’, offers a detailed overview of the city’s crime status throughout the year. By May 31st, this system had traced 112 murders, witnessing a remarkable decline of 28% as compared to the previous year, which correspondingly equates to 44 fewer incidents. There was also a reduction of approx 20% in the shooting statistics with 264 shootings, 70 lower than the same timeframe in the preceding year.
A progressive analysis reveals that the frequencies of shootings and homicides have been notably lower than pre-pandemic data. Previously, the years 2014 and 2017 marked the least violent first five months of the year with 113 documented murders. Moreover, the lowestrecord instances of shootings during this time were in 2018, with 267 reported cases.
The city authorities attribute the remarkable crime decrease in May to the implementation of the Summer Violence Reduction Plan. As part of this plan, initiated on May 5th, 70 regions with heightened crime rates were identified across 57 precincts throughout the metropolis.
These identified regions were monitored and patrolled by over 1,500 uniformed officers during the times when violence was most expected. The result of this effective approach visibly showed a 28% decrement in the rate of crime within the operational zones during the monitored periods.

An unusual surge was registered in the category of rapes, with a 27% increase, elevating from 645 reported incidents last year to a current total of 820. The foundational reasoning given for this unexpected rise can partly be attributed to the modifications in legislature in the preceding September.
These significant legislative changes broadened the legal conceptions and definitions of rape under the jurisdiction of New York state law. Consequently, a wider range of sexual assault incidents now falls under this definition and could partly explain the increase in reported cases.
